Cooling off Baby's Room

Due to the rising BGE rates, we haven't turned on our AC yet. Fortunately, we live in a home that stays relatively cool for the most part and haven't had much need for the AC. We do however, turn a box fan on from time to time to circulate the air, and the box fan in our room stays on all night not only to circulate the room, but for white noise too. We just purchased two Galaxy fans from Wal Mart, one to put in our baby's room. I noticed in the morning the room smelled strange, like a burning motor. We tried the other fan we bought and it was ok for the first two nights, but then today I noticed the smell again. The Lasko fan in our room has never smelled, or given us a problem. But I read that Lasko, Galaxy and some other brands of fans (which all must be produced by the same manufacturers), have been recalled due to fire hazards. So now I am frightened to leave the fans on throughout the night, especially in my son's room. Does anyone own or know of a good, loud brand of box fan or any type of fan that is good at circulating the air? Or does anyone have any other recommendations for air producing machines, other than the AC, to help conserve electric rates?

What can I do next?

Hi E.,
We use window fans that we got from Wal-Mart. I don't know the brand, but they have accordian-like sides to fit in any width window & the ones we have you can choose if they blow air in or suck it out.

E.,
Take those fans back to Wal-Mart! It does not sounds right that they would produce a smell like that and you should worry about leaving them on all night. Do not take the chance on them. Trust your instincts! A mother's instinct is always right!!! Perhaps a HEPA would work? I use one in each one of our bedrooms. It circulates that air and cleans it all in one. I have also used the Wal-Mart accordion window fans and never had any issues with them. We also have a small metal Lakewood fan in each of the rooms. We use them for white noise, and the breeze. Perhaps look into a small plug in A/C unit? One that may not take up too much energy, but just enough to cool off the room when it is too hot! If it is just in one room and only on during evening or nap, it should not use up that much energy.
We are personally looking into Solar to conserve energy...

Hi,
We had the same problem in my daughter's room. The best window fan we have found is a Honeywell HW-628 Twin Window Fan. It stretches to fit different size windows and has two strong fans in it. We have one in our bedroom and one in our daughter's bedroom and they both run constantly through the summer. There haven't been any problems with the motor yet. Hope this helps!

Dear E.,

We recently purchased Seville tower fans. We do run our AC (we all have horrible spring allergies) but the top floor of our home gets terribly hot, because of vaulted ceilings and skylights. Love these fans! We got them at Costco in a 2 pack, and recently went out to get one more pack. They make some noise when oscillating, I'm not sure if it would be loud enough white noise for your son. I find it to be a nice noise buffer. I also like that they look nice and don't take up too much room. Fits nicely in a corner. I'll send a link for you to check out. Good Luck! T.

E.,

Please, take the fans back to WalMart. We had 2 Lasko fans and they both smelled strange for a couple times when we had them on, then they sparked and started to burn. Luckily, we were home and awake. My husband unplugged them quickly and set them outside. Yes, I know you have a Galaxy, but they are made by the same manufacturer. Instead, I would recommend a GE floor model fan if you want to use a fan. Or invest in an air purifier. Not only do they clean the air, they will circulate the air better, and they have white noise.

~~Good Luck!~~

I too have been trying to conserve on my electric bill.Have you thought about getting a ceiling fan? We have them in our rooms and I leave my kid's fans on all night and have not had a problem. I previously used a small table fan and that was great for noise drownage. I don't remember name brands, but it was nothing expensive or fancy, but it did the job.

We have a ceiling fan in our room & in our daughter's room which seems to help. I sometimes even have to turn it down during the night because I wake up cold.

Hi E.,
Can you install ceiling fans? That's what we use in our bedroom and soon-to-be nursery. When they are on high blast it's very nice. We also have a stand fan, but I don't know the name brand, that we haven't had a problem with. I haven't heard of free-standing fans being recalled, that is new to me. Does Home Depot or Lowe's sell fans? If so, you can talk to their department rep and ask them what they recommend. I'm sure a lot of peole are in the same boat b/c of the rate increase.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I use a Hawaiian Breeze tower fan in my son's room to circulate air and as white noise. It works well and I never have smelled anything like that. The only problem with it being a tower fan is that he wants to stand against it or bang on it, etc.

How do you feel about ceiling fans? If cost is the issue, Lowe's has some basic ones for $50 or so--I'm sure the "marts" do, too.

My husband and I have had a similar conversation regarding cooling our daughter's bedroom. We purchased an inexpensive fan at Home Depot as a temporary solution, but plan on installing ceiling fans in her bedroom as well as our guest bedroom (our master bedroom already has one). We really feel that ceiling fans are the best at circulating air (at low speeds) and cooling (at higher speeds) in lieu of using the air conditioning.

I like the small Vornado fans. I think you can find them at Sharper Image , but Home Depot as well. I would take those fans out of your son's room as soon as possible!
