I always have placed it a few feet away form my children. I would think that if the cool mist is in her face it could make her sick.
As a new mother to an infant, my baby has become very congested and I believe that it is due to the mold in the apartment. I had consulted with my pediatrician, and he suggested to purchase a cool mist humidifier. On none of the instructions, does it say where exactly to place the thing in the room vs where the baby is located. do i place her directly in the mist? do i place the mist close, but do not let it touch her? or do i place it on the other side of the room?

I've always placed mine about 2-3 feet away on a dresser or bedside table rather than the floor. I sometimes notice that the surrounding area gets a bit damp so I set mine on a towel and also try to adjust the mist volume down a bit. With my daughter it seemed that the mist bothered her I assume because it was too chilly - I agree that at least a few feet from the bed is good. I wouldn't put it across the room though - probably not enough concentration of moisture to help if it's that far away. Good luck and congratulations on your daughter!
It can make her chilly if it is too close. I always placed ours about 8 ft away. That was where it was convenient to place it. But at least a few feet would be better than right next to her, I would think. Make sure you follow the cleaning instructions so that the humidifier itself doesn't get mildewy, also.
When I use the cool mist humidifier for congestion, I shut the bedroom door so that the room air is more humid. I do have to be sure to keep the door open during the day so that the room dries out. Otherwise the moisture streaks down the walls and lets me know how dusty they are. lol
I agree with the other responses, just wanted to add a couple thoughts. (Based on the directions that came with my cool mist humidifier.) You should not place it on the floor, but at least 2 feet off the floor. It should be on a hard, water-proof surface. (Putting it on a towel isn't a great idea because it can block the fan and make the motor overheat.) And it should be adjusted so the mist is sprayed into the air, but you don't see it coming back down. (You can see the mist's path easier with a dark background - a dark towel or blanket held up behind it may work...) If the setting is too high, the water will fall and collect on the floor or surrounding surfaces instead of evaporating into the air.
Good luck! I hope your little one feels better soon.
If there's mold a humidifier is going to add to the mold, not reduce it. Makes everything very humid. Mold is very damaging for you and your little one, can set up life long health problems.
I bought mine when my son was a couple of months old, I had mine on the floor a couple of feet from the crib. I noticed it was more effective when I closed the doors to the room off (bathroom, closet and door to room). It created a damp after rain feel, but it helped a lot.
sounds like you got some good answers! I always put mine on a step stool in the middle of the room, a few feet from the bed. Closing the door is best.
Here's what I've always done...Place it across the room from the crib. About an hour before bedtime, turn it on high & close the door. When she goes to bed, turn it to low & run it all night.
