After the recent rain/ floods, we are looking for a contractor to remodel our family room and a full bath in our Elmhurst home. Does anyone have a recommendation for a contractor close to Elmhurst. Information on Contractors to avoid would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We had a bad experience with a local contractor, and unfortunately I can't mention a name due to legal reasons. But... I will tell you what to look out for that I realized too late. Go with your gut, if the person your dealing with has a bad attitude, or there's just something you don't like about them, find someone else. Do your homework, check the BBB, get at least 3 estimates, (they vary greatly), get references & take the time to check out their work (ask the homeowner if they wouldn't mind you stopping by to see their 'new room'), get a copy of proof of liability as well as workmen's comp. insurance (call the ins. co. direct & verify coverage, dates can be easily changed on a cert. of ins.), have a signed copy of the contract, make sure EVERY detail is covered, whatever is not in your contract is usually extra. Good luck to you with your remodel & do some research.
TradeWorks, located in La Grange. Contact name is John Rehor. He does excellent work and is trustworthy.
Echoing the sentiments of Diane G.'s answer, make sure you thoroughly read your contract, and ask questions, however silly they may seem. An honest contractor should be willing to spend the time educating the client throughout the project so surprises are kept to a minimum. If you have a chance, check out robmichael.com and rjmbuild.net...we are located in Glen Ellyn and would love to speak with you.

Very professional work, reasonably priced. Based out of Downers Grove.
We used Synergy Builders last fall to finish our basement. They are located in West Chicago. (We live in Elmhurst too) They were professional, on time/schedule and did a great job. Also, initially when we were planning things out, we worked with their designer Alex who did a GREAT job helping pick things out. Would highly recommend! If you would like more info, feel free to send me a message and I can give you their #, etc.
I highly recommend Vern Elton, who does business as Beth-Shar Construction, Inc. He does great work, and I doubt you will find anyone who will charge you less. He lives in Warrenville but will travel to wherever the job is. We were initially introduced to him in 2003 when we purchased our home and wanted to remodel our basement and install a full bath in it. My aunt and uncle knew him from church, so we included him when collecting bids from various contractors. We chose him because his bid was about half of the next-lowest bid, and he came with great references, plus we just really liked him. Since then, our basement has flooded numerous times, and each time we have hired him to fix things up for us again. We also had a fire last December and had to move out while the home was repaired. Vern did all the rebuild, and we couldn't be happier. His number is ###-###-####.
I had a wonderful experience with the contractor Bob Tomaska ###-###-####. He is located in Elmhurst and was extremely professional and did exceptional work in a timely fashion.
Highly recommended!
