Contractions at 34 Weeks

I have a question.
I went to the doctors today and had a NST because I have a two vessel cord. The baby is fine but they said I was having contractions every minute or so, I couldn't feel them at all. They gave me a shot of something I can't say to stop the contractions and it worked. The doctor didn't seem to worried about it, just said to drink a lot and rest. He said they would do it again at my next appt, in two weeks. My mom says I should call them and make have them do it again in a couple days. What do you think? Should I call and make them do it again sooner, or do you think doctor knows what he is doing? This is my first time having a baby so I have no clue what to do! Thanks in advance for any advise.

What can I do next?

I'd say you're probably okay, but it never hurts to call if you have any concerns. You might at least find out what it was you were given and research it to see how long it usually works. Maybe it really can last two weeks, and that's why they told you to wait that long. A friend of mine was actually sent to a specialty hospital (air lifted) because the doctor couldn't stop her contractions. Once they finally did stop, she never had any more problems, and actually ended up having to be induced. If you're not on bed rest, the doctor isn't very worried at all. Remember, it's a "non" stress test, so don't stress that baby with worry. If you just can't relax, call and see what they'll do for you. Stress will only make it worse. If you have to, remind your mom that she shouldn't be stressing you out, for the sake of her grandbaby. The doctor's office is used to worried mommies-to-be calling with questions, so don't hesitate anytime to call, even after hours. After all, that's what you're paying them for, anyway. Congratulations! Take advantage of this, and rest, rest, rest. Let others help you as much as possible, and enjoy helping that baby grow healthy!

I agree with your mom. At the very least call the office and find out why they want to wait so long to see you. Also, start writing things down (like the medication they put you on). Not an OB expert but if you were put on a medication to stop contractions and you are not feeling them how do you know for sure the medication is working? Only you know how you are feeling. I would not hesitate to contact my doctor for any reason if you are not sure. That is what doctors are there for!!!!! Good Luck!

With my pregnancies, I was given terbutaline to stop contractions, which always made my heart race!! They gave me a shot, but I had to take oral pills as well. I do think doctors know what they're doing, but it's your peace of mind that matters and there's nothing wrong with calling in and asking questions and see if they can check you again at 35 weeks instead of 36. It would make you feel better, help you to be calm, which is good for the baby. Just remember you're this baby's mommy and that's no accident!! I also can't stress enough the importance of drinking LOTS of water, here in Colorado the pre-term labor rates are higher because of our altitude and you get dehydrated easier - that's what caused my contractions. So, grab a giant water bottle, put your feet up, and call your doctor. Enjoy your little one when he/she arrives, time flies by fast!

YOu should do what feels right to you. If you want to be checked sooner, do that. Premature labor is not something to be taken lightly and CO has a very high rate because of the altitude. Terbutaline is a very serious medication and can have serious side effects - did they tell you about that? Take the recommendations about drinking and resting very seriously as well. Don't hesitate about calling the dr or going to the ER if you feel contractions or feel things changing. But if you feel well and the extra water and rest are helping, then weekly check-ups should be enough.

No, you don't need to be concerned about contractions at 34 weeks. They are likely Braxton-Hicks and normal, especially if you couldn't feel them. I'm an OB/GYN physician and we don't treat preterm labor beyond 34 weeks because the babies do as well in the long run as babies born at term (37 weeks and after). What does surprise me is that you're only getting the NST's for a 2 vessel cord every two weeks. Usually NST's are done weekly or twice a week. HOpe this helps!
