Contraception - Lima,OH

What is a good birth control method after pregnancy? I know right now with breastfeeding I can only take the mini pill or the depo shot. I can't take the mini pill because I've had cysts in the past.

My Hubby and I think we are done having kids but I guess we don't want him fixed either because then its like we can't ever have kids again. So I refuse to go on the pill due to the lawsuits out there. I'd like something that isn't very dangerous to take. I want something that is almost 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. I know abstinence is only 100% so we are looking for something close. I was on the pill awhile ago and it worked very well. I'm just too scared due to the blood clots and everything that the lawsuits were out on.

If anybody can please give me some advice I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

What can I do next?

Iuds are safe. There is a nonhormonal one as well as one with low dose progesterone. They are 99% effective and reversable.

I used a diaphragm after #3.... it worked very well for us. When we decided to have a 4th child, it was relatively easy to get pregnant... no hormones had gotten messed up.

After he was born, we went back to the diaphragm... and that worked just fine until we decided (5 years later) that we WERE finished having kids, and I had my tubes tied.

(We had used condoms for the first 3.... and two of those kids were "gifts" ... I was relying on faulty memory on where I was in my cycle and not using them every time.... not a good idea! I don't regret any of my kids, though... they are all wonderful, productive citizens!)

You just have to be sure to put it in before you get too involved..... otherwise, you might not want to stop before it is too late!

Condoms/latex free condoms. You can also use the fertility awareness method where you track your fertility. There is a good book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." It works great if you do it right. You have to abstain or use condoms during your fertile phase. The book is helpful. Good luck!

condoms. I never recomend pills or the IUDs etc because you can still get pregnant, quite easily actually. they dont prevent pregnancy at all. what they do is to keep the fertilized egg from attaching. so pretty much they are just non invasive abortions.

Condoms! I personaly refuse to use anything that contains hormones, so for the past 10 yrs that's what I've used and worked really well.

Please read "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It describes the fertility awareness method, which we used to both avoid and achieve pregnancy. You're only fertile for about 5 days a month, so charting using the book's guidelines lets you know when to abstain. Best part about it is, no side effects, and it's very, very reliable!

I had a Mirena IUD for 5 years and like it for the most part. No periods, no mood swings, etc. Now I have a paragard IUD, which is hormone free. I believe you can have that one while you are breastfeeding. I have only had this one for 6 months so far--I like it!

Research using the Nuva Ring. It is very low dose and is inserted in the vagina, it is a ring that is kept in the fridge until it's put in. My friend who can't take any other form of BC was able to use it all the time and had no problems.

Have you thought about Natural Family Planning? I've never done it, but my friend swears by it and after 12 years has never had any surprise pregnancies. I wouldn't no where to begin about telling you want to do, but there are tons of books out there and I know there are some strong supporters of NFP on this website. You may have good luck getting a Fertility book to learn how to read your cylce. Just a thought.

IUD - especially if you're looking for long term contraception. You can get it with hormones (Mirena) or without (Paraguard).
Talk to your OB about options. I love mine.
