Not sure about her drinking habits, but plenty of water and/or apple juice will help her too.
Hello Everyone,
I have a 10 month old baby girl who has always been prone to constipation. She is beginning to feed herself foods and I was wondering what foods are more of a natural laxative. I know prunes work wonders and so do the prune/apples juice stuff, but I wanted to keep giving her a variety of foods and not have to rely on prunes.
Thank you so much for all your advice!
C.
We've started incorporating a lot of the foods mentioned and are laying off the banana's for a bit. She seems to be doing wonderfully.
Thank you! As always, you are all amazing!

Hi C.,
My 2 1/2 yr old daughter has always had this problem.(runs in the family)
At that age I fed her oatmeal cereal with prune baby food mixed in every morning. Other things that keep stool softer are pears, carrots, blueberries and flax seed. Avoid too many bananas, rice, most crackers, cheeses and those Gerber puffs. I make sure my daughter drink plenty of water and gets exercise. Probiotics have helped and I got them at Whole Foods. Sometimes it is as easy as eliminating wheat. When your daughter starts on milk, make sure she isn't drinking too much as this can also constipate her. I wouldn't give her stool softeners or laxatives though. Just keep playing with her diet and take it on day at a time. My daughter has days where her stool is hard and so I up the pears.:) I also read somewhere to increase the fat in the diet a little and avoid all processed foods. We don't eat many processed foods in our house so it isn't a problem.
Good luck,
L.
i think oatmeal works, too. good luck!
Pears, peaches and apricots are great...so are avocados. i know bananas have a lot of potassium and can add to constipation along with rice. lemon and water help too. good luck!
Whole grains... nothing processed or "white" on top of the apples, prunes and other fruits and veggies.
Get some ground flax and add to the oatmeal. My son is 8 months and has had trouble every since he started food. I give him flax every day so he can go.
I believe pears, peaches, plums, apricots, and peas help, too.
feeding solids too often/soon can be a problem. Also, if you ARE nursing, evaluate what you are eating that could be passed on. If you are giving formula, add karo to the formula. That is what my mother used for my constapation. If you use karo, heat it before adding it to the formula. Applesauce is a big help. A ten month old is too young for prunes in my opinion. I began putting both my children on the potty chair (belted on) at this age as it seemed more comfortible to grunt our & release bowel movement. Both my kids poop trained earlier than most, but then I did not but them about urine training as that wet diaper was a lot easier to deal with. Once they potty train it can be a pain when you are out or on the road. I gave them a tiger cookie from the health store if they pooped as a reward AND put them on the potty at regular times during the day. Consistance it key. DO not give any candied cereal, candy, gum & yoguard is super! Hope this helps.
