Constantly Sick!

Since September, I have had such a time with being sick. I have had the flu shot and since then I've only had one real respiratory cold/flu. But other than that, I have had the stomach flu twice (one time put me in the ER), a battle with fevers, sore throats/tonsillitis, and even pink eye (for the first time on Christmas, nonetheless, Ugh!).
Right now I'm battling a sore throat that I've had for a week. I went to the doctor for it and he gave me an antibiotic that is sort of working, but not really. If that makes any sense! My throat is still pretty bad at night and I just feel exhausted during the day. I'm one day away from being done with the 5-day antibiotic. It seems that Sudafed PE works better than the meds he gave me. My sister (RN) thinks it might be viral...? I've tried salt water and listerine..not working!
My son is in daycare but he has only had a fraction of what I had (thank goodness) and without a flu shot. I know people say sometimes the shot makes things worse but I had it last year and it did me well.
I'm wondering if anyone has had the same "luck" the flu season after having a baby? It just seems my immune system doesn't want to give me any breaks. I'm supposed to get my wisdom teeth out on Jan 6th and they won't operate unless I'm healthy. I've never had a year where I have been this constantly sick. Has anyone else gone through this?
Any advice as to how to get well quick and stay healthy would be appreciated!

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone, SO MUCH for your advice. Since I wrote the post, I got rid of that darn sore throat, I was well enough to get my wisdom teeth out, but I did end up getting the stomach flu again (from my son in daycare), and pink eye again. I missed 2 days of classes on my first week back to college but now I am back at it! I got into my chiropractor which made my back and hips feel a ton better, I'm taking Synergy Basic Multi-Vitamins every morning, and I'm going to the Y twice a week to work out! While my son and I are gone now, my mom opens up the doors and windows of the house for half an hour to let it air out and we sanitize everything every few days. My son and mom have been fighting bad colds and so far (knock on wood!), I haven't gotten it! I think my immune system is starting to kick back in after fighting all of these colds and flus.
But I just wanted to thank all of you moms for all of the advice--it feels so nice to be able to get back to LIFE!

L., I am so sorry you are feeling so off lately. I have found Isotonix OPC-3. This works great. I am the one that gets sick even if my kids get the sniffles- they get the flu I get the flu. Until I started OPC-3 that is. My son and I both take it and when my daughter and her dad were sick we didn't get it!!! I also have a hard time keeping my iron levels up and normaly feel lightheaded, like I have a buzz going on without the alcohol. These symtoms have gone since I have been on it. I feel clear headed for the first time in about 10 years. I would recomend this to everyone. I like it so much I now have a website where you can buy it. My mom and a good friend of mine are also on it. You can find it at www.marketamerica.com/pamrorman

I had some serious health issues not long ago. My doctor requested that I go on a diet that would boost my immune system. It is harsh, but man did it improve my health and recovery.

No caffeine, processed sugar, little read meat, no gluten, and no legumes.

I ate a lot of fish, chicken, fruits, and vegetables. It was hard but it did the trick.

Hi L.:
It sounds like your immune system is just down. Try taking echinacea daily to boost your immune system. And be very displined about washing your hands and public surfaces you touch. Grocery cart handles and esclator hand rails are breeding grounds for cold and flu viruses. Keep hand sanitanizer in your purse and use it all the time. After touching surfaces that are known to be germ colonies do not touch your face especially eyes, nose or mouth until using the sanitanizer. I normally don't believe in using anti-bactrerial(sp) cleaners all over the house but in your case it might be a good idea for a while. If you use to many anti-bacterial cleaners you actually weaken your immune system because it has nothing to fight off. Antibiotics do the same thing. Check out any local natural food store or natural healing shop in your area. The people there might have some other ideas to boost your immune system.
Chamomile tea works wonders to rid the body of virus infections. I use a 12 cup drip coffee maker and put the tea bags in the pot and let the water drip in. Let it steep for about 5 minutes drink the entire pot of tea in one day. You can drink as much as you want this is safe for babies so don't worry about getting too much. It makes you Pee like crazy it also makes you sweat. This is how our bodies get rid of toxins one or two days of drinking a pot of camomile tea and you will be feeling better. If you don't like the taste of the tea use one tea bag of camomile and one bag of peppermint tea, it will taste more like the pepermint, you can add a little sugar. If this doesn't work look for a Reiki practioner. If you can't find one let me know I know several and I am a Reiki practioner myself.
I hope you feel better soon.

1) Visit a chiropractor
2) Take a multivitamin and vitamin D supplement. Add in some zinc and echinacea whenever you are fighting something.
3) Drink loads of water everyday
4) Get 8 hours of sleep, NO MATTER WHAT!
5) Clean up your diet, eat whole foods and less processed stuff. Eat yogurt with live cultures to help reestablish healthy stomach organisms after having been on antibiotics.
6) Don't throw antibiotics at any illness unless you have a confirmation that it is bacterial. Antibiotics are live savers when used properly but wreak havoc on our bodies when overused.

All these things will help boost your immune system which is what you need right now. Good luck and take care of yourself.

Hi there,
Sorry to hear you've been so under the weather. It may sound cliche' but have you been eating well and taking vitamin supplements???? I would advise a healthy diet full of fruits and veggies and at the very least a good multivitamin and mineral supplement. I have a wellness business and for more specialized supplements we have very good antioxidants and a product called "Immune" which is basically to boost your Immune system..I took it all last season and I never really got more than an itchy throat for 1-2 days.
Anyway, I hope this helps...take care of yourself. If you have not seen a doctor you may want to do some bloodwork as well to make sure nothing more serious is going on.........take care

The year after my oldest was born I had bronchitis, pneumonia, a sinus infection and the stomach flu in a two month span. It was an effective way to lose the baby weight! I think you just get tired and run down and your immune system gets out of whack. It's probably especially hard to get enough sleep as a single mom. Try visiting a chiropractor. They can supposedly help your immune system. I know it's hard, but adequate rest, exercise, a healthy diet and hand washing are probably the best things you can do. Also, the flu shot won't cause your illnesses or prevent anything other than the upper respiratory influenza. Good luck.

As you know, being on antibiotics regularly will deplete your own immune system. Although I am not a doctor, nor pretend to be, my own experience with taking daily supplements and getting a dose of vitmin D(sunshine!) regularly keeps the bug away from me. It seems odd to go outside in this winter wonderland of chill, but the cold and flu season hits us hardest in the wintery areas of our country because we don't get outside enough to get the sun we need, to get the vitamin D we need, to boost that immune system of ours. Make sense??? And since a tank topand shorts aren't part of our regular routine right now to get that sunshine, vitamin D supplements are available just about anywhere.
Hope this helps...

Hi L.,

You're not alone! I have been hearing more and more about this viral infection/flu that has been going around.

I have been fortunate to have avoided it. But many of my family and friends have been going through what you have been going through. They seem to be giving it to each other.

If you want to learn more about how to disinfect your home, and perhaps get yourself on some supplementsd that will build your immune system, let me know.

I have been helping a lot of people these past few months! :-)

Best wishes,

L.,
Our family prevents and treats successfully using therapuetic-grade essential oils. We don't know what we would do without these and have not been sick in several years (since using oils). Also helps to take good quality immune building supplements. I would be happy to share with you where to get these products and what we use that really works!
Chiropractic care is also great to keep your body in balance.

I am so sorry you are sick..that stinks. I think you should find yourself a really good chiropractor. Keeping your body aligned really helps. I would also get yourself a good probiotic. Most chiropractors sell them, but you can get a good brand at any whole foods or GNC type store. Having a baby takes a lot out of you. It takes a long time for your body to recover and balance itself out.

Good Luck

Hi L. - I had a baby the middle of August and since then I have yet to consider myself healthy. I had gall bladder surgery the end of November. Since then I've been battling the common cold/flu bug weekly. I also had the stomach bug over a weekend in December. My little girl is also dealing with a cold/cough currently. This is her second one and she is only 4 months old. But, she is goes to a babysitter, where she is exposed to all kinds of germs. I honestly think it's just that time of year. Just wanted you to know that I feel your pain and know what your going through. I just can't wait until I'm healthy again.

I have to echo the advice of those who recommended visiting a chiropractor. I started taking our family to a wellness-based chiropractor last March. We go frequently....and while it's a financial investment, it's also an investment in our health. I feel that in the long run we'll not only save money because we're healthier and not needing acute medical care, but we'll also be able to enjoy life more and longer because we're healthier. We (including our kids who often play with neighbor kids who seem to have various illnesses) have rarely gotten sick since we started being adjusted regularly.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

I have had the exact same experience as you, L.. Before I had my baby a year ago I was NEVER sick, but this year it seems I'm sick every 2-3 weeks with something! It's so frustrating (especially missing lots of work after all that maternity leave)! I think it has to do with the stress of having a baby, plus being exposed to a bunch of new germs the baby brings home from daycare. My Dr. also checked me for Mono, so you may want to get tested for that too. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon!

Well, having a newish baby and having him in daycare can definitely do that. When our second was born, we had everything our first winter in MN. We just spent all kinds of time, tossing illness from one family member to another. Some of it is just the way it works, but some things I'm working on: eating well, making sure they get plenty of fruits and veggies (fresh or frozen) and yogurt. Making sure they get daily baths. They took them about 2x a week last year, but now that my older son is in preschool, I do them daily. It's not good for their skin, but I'm hoping it helps. Also, some daycares are better than others at keeping kids germ-free. When we lived in WA, we had a wonderful daycare that religiously washed hands and really was pretty darn healthy. My kid was hardly sick in three years. But...now that they're at home with me, we're always sick, I think partly because we moved across the country. Um, I'm working on teaching the kids not to share food/beverages. We wash hands when we come back from school or ECFE or other public places. I even wash my one year old's hands, something I didn't think to do w/ #1. Anyway...I feel for you. Last winter was horrible for us, and I'm actually quite fearful about this winter. But you get through it, and summer feels so good. :)

As I read your post I had a small chuckle because I'm sitting here at nearly 5am while the rest of the house sleeps. I'm battling the flu/sinus infection right now. I just went to the walk-in care yesterday and got THREE prescriptions. EVERYONE in the house got it except for my husband. We've all been sick on and off since school started in September.

Try to rest, constantly wash your hands (mine are so dried out!) and have some down time. Hope you feel better soon! And STAY that way!

Sadly yes. I have a 16 month old and have caught every illness under the sun since she was born. I've had the stomach flu twice in a year and at least 12 colds, some very bad that have hung on for weeks. There is probably a lot contributing to your illness. I've had trouble sleeping for over a year and I know that chronic sleep deprivation totally wrecks your immune system. Take a multi-vitamin, including an extra vitamin c and perhpas start taking a supplement like echinacea with golden seal which is supposed to boost your immune system.

I had A LOT of bad "colds" when I was pregnant and after the 5th cold my friend told me about Zycam nasal swabs. You start using them when you start to feel sick and they boost your immune system so you either don't get sick or your cold is a lot less intense. It worked like a charm. I still use it now when I feel a cold coming on - we mommy;s don't have time to be sick! Good luck!

Apparently you can't offer advice here or people report you...
I'm also a medical professional- sounds a bit like your sister might be on track, but have you ever been tested to see if it's viral. They can tell certain indicators? And- a common illness that comes immed. to mind is mono??
It could be other fungal like mold or allergens too???
If you're eating right and getting sleep, the preg. probably isn't the culprit.
Hang in there.
