I'm thinking about bunk beds for my 5 year old...I also have a son that is about to turn 3; he has his own room. I wanted to get others opinions that have them...Especially safety issues...Since I've not really grown up around them. They seem like a great set up for boys...Thanks!

I have bunkbeds for my son as well. No issues here. I just wanted to say, I bought my sons bunk bed at rooms to go, big mistake. the boards underneath broke in less than a year. Luckily it was under warranty and they fixed it, but then it broke again. We fixed it the 2nd time, but just a FYI the quality is NOT GOOD from rooms to go.

My 6 yr old son has a set from IKEA that was acquired when he was 3. The quality is terrible, but husband has bolted it together. If we ever move, a chainsaw will be required and it will be no more. The only reason we have it is because it is shorter than normal ones. The top bunk comes about to my chest (I'm 5'4").

He's never had any issues with the bed. However, my 3yr old daughter (who, frankly is just stubborn and accident-prone), has fallen off of it twice (no major injuries), despite rules and restrictions. She's just not allowed to go up there and every time she goes in his room I say, again, "don't get on the top bunk because you've fallen off." Some things just take repetition, although, once this bed dies, no one will be getting another bunk.

My 9 year old son has bunk beds and loves them! We got his when he was 3 years old (moved some of my husband's old things down from Maine and the bunkbead came along.) He sleeps on the bottom and the top is mainly used for overnight friends and playtime with the 200 or so stuffed animals up there. No real safety issues as the top bunk has a side rail, and we removed the ladder when he was 3 so he couldn't climb up and down without us present. Strict rule of no jumping off the top bunk or the ladder (have had to enforce that one a few times).

I think they are great!

I have one for my daughters. They share a room. It is great. We have had no accidents. The rails on the top bunk is high so she cannot roll off When she sleeps. I have set rules. For example no jumping off the top bunk and no horse playing. They have had the bunk bed since my oldest was three years old.
