Congestion - San Francisco, CA

My son is really congested. This is the first time so it's been tough. I already use a humidifier and the bulb to suck out the boogies. Plus I've done the saline nose drops. On top of that, we have a wedge underneath his mattress so he's already propped up. But for some reason when he's sleeping, that's where he's having the most problems. He moves around so much in bed that it's hard to keep him elevated. I was hoping if anyone had any suggestions??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I basically kept doing what I wrote. Used a humidifier (which I think really helped him), cleaned out his nose and would try to use saline nose drops. As for the wedge, it has it's moments. One thing that I think probably helped was that he was propped up a lot especially in his stroller which I think made breathing much easier for him.

wELL THE BEST THING TO DO IS EITHER TAKE HIM INTO THE SHOWER ROMM WITH YOU , PLACE HIM IN HIS CAR SEAT AND JUST SIT IN THERE FOR 20 MINUTES THE HOT STEAM WILL RELEASE ALL OF THE ICKIES OUT. wHEN IT IS ALSO NAP TIME TRY LETTING HIM SLEEP ON YOU PROPPED UP, iT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY YOU HAVE THINGS TO DO, BUT WHEN THEY ARE CONGESTED IT'S VERY FRUSTRTAING. gOOD LUCK AND i HOPE THIS HELPS A BIT.

There is a great Vapor rub out there that is botanically based with some awesome research put into their product! There is no mineral oil, no animal products, no animal by-products, dermatologist tested, PH correct and hypo-allergenic.

Here is were you can take a look at it if you are interested. https://www.arbonne.com/products/weight_loss/bio-nutria/r... (My ID is 15837881) We also really like to vapor soak, it's a salt that you can put in the tub; it works great.

C.,
I know what you mean about feeling like nothing works, epecially since they are so young and can't say how they are feeling. My son had a few congestions back at that age and I rubbed him down with Baby Vick vapor rub on his chest and back. That helps open the nasal area. I also used and still do use the vapor plug ins. They have Vicks vapor (STRONG) and they have a lighter version but it does help. Our son is in our room and it's a bigger room so if the vicks smell doesn't bother him then I would try that. I even like the smell myself of the vicks, helps me sleep better...

Being your son is 7 months old I can't say give him medicine they have for congestion. I have used the Pedicare congestion drops and they have helped, but my son is 2 1/2 years old.
Night time is always the worst for them sleeping.

Good luck, hope your little one feels better soon.

could be allergies. Talk to your doc about benadryl.

Saline drops, booger sucker, vicks baby-rub, vicks vapor plug, cool mist humidifier, vapor bath before bed to clear the sinuses, etc. When all of the already mentioned fails...sleep with baby on your chest sitting up. Baby’s chest and nasal passages clear best when they are elevated on their stomachs. This happen with our first when she was 8.5 month old and she was also a very active sleeper. She was always turning upside down or ending up at the bottom of the crib so the wedge never did any good. So, I slept on the couch one night with her on my chest and the next two nights with pillows propping me up in bed with her on my chest…quite comfy!! She was so tired from not feeling well that she had the best sleep ever that way. Mine was broken sleep, but it was better than getting up every thirty minutes to check on her in her room.

There are no decongestants or other meds you can use on a baby under 2 years old.

We're in the same boat!! You have done everything we've also been told to do by the doctor. Beyond those things I put my son in his swing to sleep. It is elevated and after a few hours of being up during the middle of the night again......desperate times called for desperate measures. It worked like a charm for us.
I also got one of those plug in vapor things. It seems to help a bit. I'd try anything at this point!!!
Good luck!

Swings are great for keeping baby propped up, and some strollers. Hope he is feeling better!
