My computer has been invaded by something that keeps throwing up ads w/ every web page change I make!! How annoying!! I've run my Norton anti virus and my Microsoft something that's supposed to find spyware. Neither of them have found it. Anyone have any suggestions on what else I can try? Preferably free. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! It was listed under my programs and I would never have thought to look there because I didn't download anything. Now it's gone!

go to the settings on your computer, then control panel, then add or remove programs. On this page, you will be able to see all the programs that are on your computer. You can delete or "remove" these items that you do not need. Sometimes you inadvertently say "yes" to a question and it adds on annoying stuff like that and is on there everytime you change a web page. But be very careful when you do this, and only remove something that you are absolutely sure you do not need. If you remove something that is important to how your computer runs, you may have to take it to a computer shop to get it restored. Something that I do, is if I don't know what something is on my computer, I google the name of it. Lots of times it will tell you that it is a virus. We also use something called CCleaner.com that we found out about, when we had to pay someone to clean up our computer. It is free. I also have all that other anti virus stuff on my computer too. Good luck.

I'm not sure what windows operating system you are using, but if you know how to go back and restore to an earlier point, that might fix it. If it just started in the last couple of days you can go back to 5 days ago and hit "restore now".
Also, you can go to tools on your browser and then to options, check and see what it is showing for your start up homepage and change it to what you want it to be. Also make sure your "popup blocker" is set to "on".

This is why I keep pictures I care about on an external hard-drive, and I wipe my hard drive and start over OFTEN. It's just so much easier. If you don't have a stand alone version of your favorite windows version, you'll be glad to get one. Computer geeks charge around 100 dollars every single time they wipe your drive and start over. They'll charge even more if you want them to back up your pictures and music. Learn to do this yourself and then the virus people can not hurt you. It's like having a new pc every time I do it anyway. It's nice and easy.

http://www.community-feedback.com/index.php? This is a forum that gives free advice and real good help. I have been there for years and they have always been able to help me for free and resolved any and all problems that I ever had with my computer. You have to register in order to post your question on the MALWARE HELP section. JudyC is very good and she will talk you through. All you need is some time, a little patience and a printer to print out the instructions. Even a novice to the subject can do this. Good luck.

I use Ad-Aware to clean up anything the other virus check does not get. There is a free version online. If this is a virus, you may have to use a different machine to download onto a flash drive and then move it to your machine.
