Comfortable Bike Helmet

I have a picky 4 year old son who will not wear his bike helmet for very long because he says it is not comfortable and itchy. Are there any brands out there more or less comfortable than others that you have found? Going without is obviously not an option, but he just doesn't ride his bike for very long right now because of this. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Call me old fashioned, but why not let him go without? I have watched a lot of children, never made any wear a helmet while biking, and none were ever hurt. You must do what you as a mother feel best of course, but I think going without is a reasonable option.

i have just been looking for a helmet for my 4 yr old son also. I found one at Wal-Mart that I liked, but we have not bought it yet. It is Bell brand and it is called True fit. I tried it on him and it seemed to fit well and be light and comfortable. But we didn't buy yet, so he hasn't worn it longer than trying it on. Good luck!

Most kids' bike helmets have additional padding strips that attach to velcro inside to make a good fit. My kids also hated their helmets for the same reason. I took some soft material and glue it onto the padding and later over the velcro and along the edge that comes nearer the face and it made it a little more comfy. When he gets older, the helmets do not have the velcro pieces any more so they should not be as bad. Felt or flannel material should not make the helmet less safe since it will not cause it to slide or change the fit. Just watch the type of glue or other adhesive used since some get hard under the material.

Try letting him wear a baseball cap under the helmet.

Hope this helps.
