Collierville High Vs. Houston High

Hi all! My teenager is about to enter high school. We are zoned for Houston High, but she wants to stay with her friends and go to Collierville. Most of the teachers I have asked say there is no real difference in the academics of each school, so I am trying to find out a little more on my own. Does anyone know anything specific about each school? I have found their test scores to be quite close, so the real difference to me would be safety, classroom size (they are both equal in # of students), etc. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have 2 at CHS. The school is very informative, if you stay in touch, they will stay in touch. I am fulltime working mom and have 5 all together. I like Collierville, I will admit it has just as many issues as all high schools. But I have found - My daughter is a sphmore now, that her friends are most important, she has changed her best friends this year. Now her grades ar eimproving because it is important to the other 2, one is in honors classes. There is strength in numbers, the decisions they are faced with in high school these day are tough. The grades, ( if her friends are honor roll students - keep her with them), the parties, the drinking, drugs. If you know her friends parents well this is also a plus because you can all keep a watch together. I had and still do have my best friends since 5th grade. we all went to Germantown High - which is basically what CHS is like now. I could not have made it without them.
If she is doing poorly, needs a change in friends then do what a parent should do and change her environment. But if she is doing well and her friends are a source of positive encouragement - do not rock the boat. Both schools are good, it is what goes on with you, your family and her friends that will guide her through these years. The good option you have is if she goes in the wrong direction, you can always put her in the other school. And you can tell her she must make the grades, etc.. or you will put her in Houston. Good luck:)!!!

Hi, my 15 yr. old is Sophomore at Houston. I like the academics of the school but it is very crowded right now till they build the new High School in East Memphis (Shelby Dr. area). I also am concerned with the number of kids who have too much money and too much time at this school. The "North Face" crowd is prevalent and can be daunting for kids who can't keep up with the Joneses. I think Collierville is a little more diverse as far as economic classes. Hope that helps for what it is worth. If your child is into Art Houston has an excellent Art Teacher....I am told she is "one in a million" and my daughter just loves her and is challenged by her daily! Good luck.

Unfortunately, I don't have a teenager. I'm an "older" mother with a 3 year old.

Just curious about where your mother's day out program is. We need to get her involved in a summer "program" to prepare for pre-school. She is at home right now.

My cousin has her 17 year old at Collierville High school. It has been a good school, but from what I am told, it is way over crowded, which would not be good in a fire or other disaster. That is the only bad thing that I have heard, but don't go on what I was told (hear say) look into it. My son is in COllierville Elem. and it has been a wonderful school. Good Luck
