Hi lovely Mamas,
We are moving from Santa Barbara to the Boston area at the end of this month. Yikes! I am trying to get gear together for the family so that everyone is warm and comfortable right away. I went to REI the other day, but got so confused I came home with nothing. Now I am looking online and I am going in circles (down jacket or 3-in-one jacket, etc, etc.). I could use some solid advice from you brave Mama's who run around in the snow with your kids all Winter about what you wear and how you layer?! I would love to know brands you like, how and what you layer, what is essential, what is extra, and even what is just popular or a current trend. We are all on the tall, thin side. My boys will be 4 and 6 this Winter.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

What can I do next?

IF it snows this year (last year was barely in Boston metro!), the main thing is the good snow boots and gloves. The gloves can be hard to find later in the season. Other things - jacket/coat - you can layer if needed.
Polyester is warm and plentiful.
You can shop some stuff used (ebay, thrift, consignment), important if you don't want to buy $40 snow boots that they may grow out of before they can use them.
Trusty boots brands - there must be others but we have seen these:
Khombu, Kamik, Stride Rite

Hi,
we live in the Boston area - and for the littles, I find a good winter coat, hat, mittens and snow pants and boots essential. You never know - as the other poster mentioned, could be a terrible winter with lots of snow, could be mild - but best to be prepared!

I usually purchase a 3 in one coat from the Children's Place - I can usually find them on sale and can get a coupon. I like the boots from either LL Bean or Land's End. Hats and gloves can come from anywhere I can find that match the coat and that I have a coupon for. Last year I got DD's from Kohl's (thin, but fine for waiting at the bus stop) and a pair from Land's End (thicker and heavier - good for extended outdoor play). Down will be good and warm, the 3 in one you can get more use out of - don't sweat it, either will keep the kids warm.

I tend to layer the kids in really cold weather - fleece pants, long sleeve tops with a fleece top over them (thin, for indoor wear, not a jacket).
My son seems to run warmer than my daughter, his cheeks pink up when he wears a fleece; you will have to see how your kids run. Kohls is great for that - nice coordinating outfits, they usually have sales and coupons.

Just purchase what you need before Christmas - so many people purchase that stuff for Christmas that if you don't get it by then, it is GONE. You will only be able to get bathing suits in January! The nice think about Lands End and LL Bean and Kohls is that they have really good return policies. Lands End and LL Bean will be more expensive up front but they also have really good customer service people who might be able to help you.

Good Luck!

Congratulations on your big move! One thing I can say about Boston (I have lived here since elementary school) is there are some great things to see and do especially in and around the city. Also, there are some great places to vacation on the Cape and the Islands as well as you must visit Newport, RI at some point. Regarding clothing for kids we have had some crazy winters - a couple of years ago it snowed almost daily and last year we had about 1 or 2 days of snow. We have had good luck with the gap coats for kids. LL Bean is also a great place for winter clothing. You can visit the store at the Legacy Place in Dedham. It is a good idea to have a good pair of snow boots, down coat, mittens, and a hat. Feel free to contact me with questions. I love talking about Boston!! Good luck.
