hi everyone i was wondering about a vacation my family and i want to take to south Carolina in dec.and well we all have allergy issues, but my 4 yr.old son is who I'm worried about the most, a friend of mine told me he would get very sick if we went in such cold weather environment we have never been in, and I'm worried he does have tubes in his ears and his allergies do seem to kick up more in the cold and now i am thinking twice about going we are only going to be up there for a week but it's not worth the risk to me my son getting really sick and being so far away from home too? He does have a ent apt. in nov., and i will ask the dr. then too, but for now i wanted to get some other advice from everyone here too.

What can I do next?

This is just some general advice. To every one.

It seems one of the biggest "fads" in America is
"AROMA THERAPY" every thing is sented. Fabric sprays (think of the build up over time) plug ins,
carpet "fresheners" ((This stuff drives poor dogs crazy))
candles, inscents, oh I could go on forever.

it is a sales gimmick-big companies don't care if their product causes misfortune.

Think about the rise in childrens allergies...
and the rise in scent related products since 1970

These products are not unlike chemicals in food.
we want to eat healthy...we don't smoke. Why inhale unknown chemicals...because they smell good???

HI. I would suggest calling your doctor and asking what his/her thoughts are. That way you dont have to wait until Novemeber when you have the appointment. Hope it all works out and you can enjoy some cooler weather in South Carolina!

I do not know where you are going in SC but it does not normally get THAT cold there. My in-laws have a house in the mountains and I think it gets down to the 30's at night. And if you will be by the beach it will be much warmer. Ask your doctor of course but I usually find my allergies to be better up there and like the other responder said...cold weather does not make you sick, germs do. Just take extra clothing and some sanitizers. Try not to worry and have fun!

My daughter has allergies and she does great in the cold. She went to IL and MI at Christmas time last year and said she felt better the week she was up there than she has in a long time. It's not the cold weather that makes his allergies worse, it's the heat indoors that causes the problems. Find out in advance what type of heat the place you are staying is going to be using. Fuel Oil bothers allergy symtoms more than natural gas does. Also wood is really bad on anyone with allergies. I see no reason to cancel the trip. Most doctors would tell you if your child has severe allergies to move to a cooler climate. Make suer you don't over dress him because if he gets to warm while outside that can cause his allergies to flair up. I would go on my vacation if it were me. I took my daughter to MI almost every Christmas for years and she has severe allergies. Have a good time.

We used to live in New York and I can say that my sons allergies and chest colds , ear aches and everything else was a constant problem. We have had way less problems since we moved to the warmer wheather. We do see a ENT, Allergist, Adhd, Pulmonary, and a Gastroenolgist to. I would defianlty recomond talking to your dr.

We took our kids to West Virginia in January and it was snowing. We didn't have any sickness issues. (My daughter is 2 now.) It's actually an old wives tale that cold weather makes you sick. It's more about germs in the environment and the strength of your immune system. I would talk to your dr about it though to be sure in case there is anything specific to your own child.

I have severe allergies and have had them since I was a toddler. My parents took us to Nebraska (in the snow) every Christmas and I never had a problem with my allergies. They seemed to do better in the winter because not as many allergens were in the air because the trees were bare.

I now have three children (16,8,5) all have allergies the youngest 2 have tubes. We have visted Nebraska when it was snowing and they didn't have any issues either. We made sure we washed our hands a lot.

You are making wonderful memories for your children that will last a life time. Why miss out on those memories because your child could get sick. Children with allergies and tubes travel all the time.

Get your doctors advice on ways to help your child but I wouldn't let fear stop me from enjoying every God given moment with my children doing something fun and special.

G.,
I just moved here from Michigan where it gets really cold most of the year. Here's the deal...the colder it gets, the more dry the air is. The dryer the air is, the more dehydrated the people are...therefore, the more likely it is that if you come in contact with germs, you will absorb them easily. Stay hydrated on your trip and you'll all be fine. If you do come in contact with germs, your body will be better equipt to fight and eliminate them. Also, wash your hands frequently.
As far as the allergies go, if they are environmental and not too serious, see if your Dr would recommend an over the counter med to take with you, and at the first signs of allergies, he could take to head off symptoms.
We are going home to MI for Christmas and will be drinking lots of water too!:)
Have fun on your trip.

Hey G.. I am from SC (moved 4 years ago), and it can get cold there. My family usually travels up for Christmas, and the temps are usually in the high 20's/low 30's. It is definitely an adjustment! This year will be the first we travel with our son (born in June). I am not sure about how the cold temps would affect your son, but I would definitely ask a doctor. I know the change in weather and pollen can really bother some people, especially when you are not in it much. The pollen should not be a problem b/c nothing is in bloom, but the temps may bother him. I would go with your doctor's advice, and hopefully the trip works in your favor. We have never been bothered by the trip, but also plan to dress accordingly. I cannot wait to get up there- much nicer weather!!
