Cold Fingers

I have a 16 mo. old that refuses to let me put anything on her fingers. They end up turning so red from the cold, and then take forever to warm up. I don't know if she already has a small case of frostbite or what. I even tried to cover them up in between her blankets this morning on our walk. I finally pinned the blanket around her, and she screamed until she got them out. I don't know how else to keep them warm. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Make a HUGE deal about picking out mittens for her, take her to the store, let her pick whatever ones she wants, even if they are boys, too big, whatever, tell these are her special hand warmers and she cannot play or go outside on cold days without them. Girls respond to choices, even as early as 16mos or at least my daughter did and still does at 6! :)
Good luck.

I don't know if this is something you'd be interested in trying, but when my daughter started to pull off her mittens, and refused to put anything on her hands, I either tried to find outfits that were a little bigger so her hands stayed in the outfit, or I tried to find outfits that had covers attatched to them. Good Luck

Hi J.,
I am the mom of a very independant 23mo. old little girl myself. No we do not have this problem, but we have a lot of other "I'm gonna do it my way" issues.
You could explain to her that she HAS to wear something on her hands durning your morning walks so that she does not get hurt. Tell her you will take her to the store and she can pick out any gloves or mittens that she would like.
When you take her to the store be very excited and encouraging. If she is not into it start showing her options so she can pick. let her know that since those are the gloves she picked she HAS to wear them. The next morning when she doesn't want them on explain to her that they are her special mittens that she picked out so she has to wear them. Tell her how beautiful they look on her. Just remember to be very excited about the gloves.
I know this seems very cheesy and she seems too young to compromise with. I learned very early with mine that letting her be in "control" and decide for herself along with a lot of enthusiasm and praise worked very well and made me much less stressed than getting upset. Although I probably look pretty silly most the time!
I hope this helps and good luck!
S.

My suggestion is to try big mittens. Maybe she doesn't like how confining kid gloves or mittens are, but wouldn't be as resistant if you gave her a pair of warm, cozy adult size mittens. My daughter is four now, but has always preferred to wear my things. I've even done this with hats, because kid ones are always so tight on the head. Also, as someone else mentioned, maybe the cold doesn't bother her even though her hands are red. Also, you could try giving her something warm to drink during your walks. She could hold the warm cup and since it is something to drink, she might be more interested in it then, say, a blanket or something.
Anyway, good luck to you,
K.

How about something to appeal to the girly side of her, like hand puppets? Or if you can find one of those old-fashioned muff things?

Hi J.,

My little 18 month old is the same way "my way or the highway" I guess I gave her a little of that.

Anyway, find some very cool and pretty gloves, they even have ones with their favorite characters on each finger, also if you put some gloves on she will see you doing it and want to do what you do.

Good Luck,
J. V.

My oldest daughter was very stubborn and we did and still do have many battles about clothes. My second, I learned I am the one in charge, and there are no other options. Try to make it fun and exciting. Maybe if she doesn't want to wear gloves, get her a muff. You could get her a small pocket size stuffed animal or little doll that she has to keep warm,so she has to hold it inside of the muff. Make her feel like she has some responsibilty and that she is a big girl. Praise her consistently when she does do it and minds the first time. Good luck!

J.,
Try putting Adult tube socks under her jacket. It makes it difficult to get off but her arms are free. It is better than nothing.

Hi J.. This is a hard one. The only suggestion I can think up is getting those "hot packs". The ones that as you play with them, they heat up. That way her hands aren't covered, but they are still warm....if she plays with it. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful. Good Luck.

if she absolutely refuses can you give her something warm to play with- like a warm blanket from the dryer- she might like how it feels out in the cold.

You dont need to worry about frostbite here in Vegas. It reall take cold cold and being out for hour and hours to have frostbite set in, unless they fall into icy water then it is minutes. She just has cold fingers. My daughter was the same way and we lived in Boise where it was really cold. She sucks her thumb so you cant cover her hands. She was fine. Even in the snow and ice walks. So no worries. Walks for an hour or so arent going to do anything to her!
