It's been a while since my SD was young enough for Club Penguin, but overall it was cute. A lot of games, very very limited chat (but kids will get around it if they wanted), and SD was mostly interested in building houses and getting clothes for her penguins. Better than neopets.

My daughter loves it. She has friends from school that she meets up with on it. She is 7 yrs old. She plays games and decorates her igloo. She likes collecting puffles also.

It's harmless. The kids can plan for free, create their own penguin, dance in a ballroom, throw snowballs at each other, have a pet. My kids played it for a few years, then grew tired of it.

Dislike? There's always the prompt to "upgrade" for a fee, so the kids will bug you about that!

My kids like it and I think it's pretty cute. Yes, you do have to pay, it's like $5.95 a month you can pay by CC or just buy the prepaid cards at the grocery store or Walmart. My 5 year old asked Santa for a membership for X-mas this year. They buy houses and clothes and different colored penguins, they have to remember to feed their penguin and there are cute lil' games on there like making pizzas...they show you a pizza and a conveyer belt comes up and you have to hurry and make the pizzas exactly how they are...or there is another one involving lobbing snowballs at targets.

IMO, it is safe and small child appropriate.
