I'm looking for ALL advice on switching to cloth diapers. My son is 6 months and last week was 13 lbs 4 oz. He's just a peanut so i'm worried that some of the brands out there will be too big around the legs. Any thoughts on brands that work for your peanut babies? Also, what are the pros and cons you've discovered with cloth? Would you recommend or not? What is one thing you wished you knew when you first started? What soap do you use to wash? Where do you purchase? How many diapers is a good amount to have on hand? ALL advice is welcome (on cloth diapering and cloth wipes) Thanks mom's!

Also... i'm in the Appleton, WI area so if you or someone you know is getting rid of stuff that might be of use for me to get started let me know! Thanks!!

What can I do next?

We have a peanut as well and are Cd'ing and love it. Much easier than may people think it is. We love www.cottonbabies.com, great customer service, awesome products as well as a great variety. I had ideas of what would work based on recommendations from friends who CD and having such a small baby changed what we have been using, took a while to figure it out....We are very happy with our BumGenuis All in One diaper. The XS size worked up until our little one was 8lbs. Now she is is the Small size at 10lbs and it seems like they should fit for a while. I would recommend looking at their All in One Mediums or the Bum Genius One Size (grows with your little guy from 7-35lbs.). At nighttime we use 1 hemp diaper doubler and no leaks! For wipes the cheapie gerber wash cloths work great, just wet them and put into diaper wipe container. To eliminate odor we keep the dirty ones in a wet bag (blueberry makes a great one that fits in most diaper pails) and wash every 1-1.5 days. 18 diapers seems to be enough, any less and you will stress yourself out with the washing.

If you do go the CD route you have to be careful with detergents, I have had great luck with seventh generation liquid detergent. You can find a great chart on the cotton babies website that can help you to determine what detergents are best. Hope this helps!

Also, no zinc based rash creams. We have been using Aquaphor (Eucerin) and no rashes!

If you have any way of using a diaper service, go for it. I can't imagine doing cloth without one! With a diaper service and the ability to easily clean the covers at home, it is pretty easy and great to use cloth. Also, I recommend not using a diaper genie or similar product for the used diapers. Just a trash can with a pop open or flip top lid works fine. Do get "Snappies" to secure the cloth.

Cons: have to go a size larger for many clothes to accommodate the bulky butt, have to carry around the used diapers when out and about, takes a while to get the hang of how to secure
Pros: so much better for the environment than any single use diaper, less diaper rash, cheaper in the long run, leads to earlier potty training, no freaky chemical gels near your child's body. Good luck and hope you get a lot of helpful responses.

I recommend shopping "Babyworks" out of Portland, OR. I used to live in Portland, now live in Boise, ID, but still bought from them. They are online (Babyworks.com), and they sell many different kinds of diapers, as well as the detergent products that I used to clean the diapers, which is BioKleen. There are a lot more options these days than when I started cloth 10+ years ago, but when I started I bought the Chinese prefolds, some good quality wraps with velcro, a sturdy diaper pail, and I was good to go. Also, if you call the gals at Babyworks, they can help you figure out what might work best for you, how many to buy, etc.

Finally, let me say "Good for You" switching to cloth diapers! They aren't nearly as big of a hassle as most people think, and there are so many benefits. :)

I am a part-time cloth diaperer. I CD when at home, but use disposable diapers when out and about and overnight. To me, this has been the best solution because I am usually at home, but then I have the convenience of paper diapers when I'm out for a long time. I never could get my son through his nap leak-free, much less through the night in a CD. He can't even wear regular disposable diapers - he needs overnights. The only cons I have found with CDing is that you do have to go up a size in clothing because of the bulkiness, and the diapers do have to be changed more regularly.

My favorite brands of cloth diapers are Bum Genius, which are a pocket diaper, and Motherease, which is an organic cotton or bamboo cloth diaper that needs a cover. My favorite covers are Bummis. Since your baby is a bit smaller, I would look into the Bum Genius, which are one size but then has adjustable sizes. I have found CDing to be a lot easier than I expected, and I don't use a diaper service (I don't see why I would need one, actually). I have a bin where I put the soiled diapers, and then a bucket for poopy diapers. For poopy diapers, I just dump what's solid in the toilet then fill the bucket with cold water and soak the diaper. I wash the diapers in hot water (they are the only laundry I do in hot water) at least once a week to refresh them and I use unscented Arm & Hammer detergent. I have never had any trouble getting stains or smell out of the diapers. I have also used Seventh Generation, and it works well as long as you wash your diapers every day.

As a side note, someone else mentioned no zinc-based diaper creams. I have never heard that before. I use Avalon Organics Zinc Diaper Cream, and I've had no problems with it. I also use Seventh Generation Diaper Wipes - they're not cloth, but they are biodegradable.

I would be happy to talk to you about CDing, so send me a message. Good luck. I think it's a great idea, and I wish more people would!
