I am pregnant and I am extremely interested in using cloth diapers. However, I have no idea how, or where to start! How many diapers does a new born use a day, a week, etc? How many do I need to buy? Or should I use a service? If so how much should I pay?

What can I do next?

We didn't do FT cloth because the daycare wouldn't take them w/o medical need (which I understand, really) but the ones we did use at home are BumGenius 3.0 AIOs. I understand there are new ones, but the ones we have are fine and have lasted from newborn to now, and she's just now being potty trained. If you are uncertain what you want, try a site (I'm trying to think of one...diapers.com?) that has a combo pack so you can see if you like the all-in-ones, the prefolds, etc. I went with AIOs in part to get my husband on board (they are similar to disposable in use). If you don't have a utility sink, invest in the sprayer that attaches to your toilet. We did use disposables in the very beginning because newborns go through a TON of diapers and I just couldn't keep up.

I would suggest buying one of several brands/types. There are a lot of different options out there. Some LOVE Bum Genius, some swear by Fuzzy Bunz. It will depend on your baby - are they big-legged or tiny? There are different fits. If you are having a baby shower, you could add the different types to the gift registry. That is what my SIL did and got almost half of her stock that way.

My approach may have been my downfall. I invested in 11?, I think. I had the best of intentions, but it just didn't work out for me. I was very intimidated by all the info and care of them. I didn't invest mentally, I guess. I said I'd try them, but gave myself an ok to not use them if it didn't work. I probably should have said, "I WILL use cloth diapers" and maybe it would've worked.

We are a very active family, and when I got home from the hospital, we basically hit the ground running! We were at the baseball park 4-5 days out of the week and with all that running, the cloth diapers were mostly in transit. We are a family of 6, so the laundry is always out of control. That was also intimidating, trying to keep up. The other issue, was that at the time, I didn't have a utility sink. I was rinsing the cloth diapers in the toilet! LOL! If that weren't enough, my daughter leaked through them almost every time I put them on her.

I am definitely NOT trying to talk YOU out of them!!! I really wish I had not let myself quit so easily. My SIL who's son used them almost exclusively (she did use disposables when they traveled), was potty trained at 2- almost to the day of his second birthday. I really think it was the diapers. Anyway, I just wanted to give you a couple things to think about and I think the different styles will give you an idea of which ones work best for you and the baby. Then, you can invest more in the ones you like the best. Have a couple packages of disposables for back up, until you figure it out.

Good luck to you and congratulations!!

Congrats! You're making a great choice! I have written several posts about cloth diapering. I loved our bumgenius pocket diapers, but we're trying out gDiapers and using prefolds with a Bumkins cover. There is a website (you'll have to google this...) that lets you get several diapers to try, and then you only keep and pay for what you like. You put a deposit down, but they refund you if/once you send some/all diapers back. I think that's the way to go! Good luck, and just know it's not nearly as difficult as it sounds! In fact, I think it's easier, because you've always got diapers, and you're already doing laundry, why not add another load?

If you look back thru my answers I have posted some info on cloth and my positive experiences.

If I had it to do all over again, i would go with all one-size pocket diapers. I really like BumGenius and thirsties brands. They are highly adjustable and as long as you care for your diapers properly they will last thru more than one baby. Talk about savings. Cloth wipes are also awesome!

I buy quite a bit from pinstripesandpolkadots.com The owner is super helpful and easy to work with.
