I am looking into cloth diapers for my twins, and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a specific brand and how they like using them. Do you feel it takes a whole lot more time vs. disposables or do you just get into a new habit? Anyone try the BUM GENIUS diapers? I am thinking of getting that brand.
Thank you so much to everyone who responded! I have been using the bumgenious for about 3 weeks now, and they have been amazing! It's def. more work than a disposable diaper, due to washing, etc., but in my opinion worth it! I no longer have to worry about buying diapers, so I think it will save me money in the long run! I use chemical-free laundry detergent, and I only need to use a 1/2 an ounce per load which is incredible with the company I shop from, I save money on all my laundry and household needs. I don't have to worry about the diapers becoming non-absorbable because they have no harsh chemicals in them to break down the fabric. I even wash in cold water, so I save there! If any of you would like to know about the detergent I use, I'd be happy to share it with you! (You have to be a member, but it's the best decision I've ever made!) I love how bumgenious holds up over nights, there have been no leaks, and as long as you follow the cleaning instructions, using cold water & low heat on the diaper cover, the velcro has not curled up at all! Thanks again for all the responses! I really appreciate it! Oh! And diaper rash, it was a problem, but I started using a product that I regularly use, called Renew, amazing on diaper rash, it clears it right up!
The only problem I ran across with cloth diapers was diaper rash. My son had that really bad with the cloth diapers. One would think they may have made improvements over the last 17 years but who knows. The only thing I would suggest would be to use powder and change them often.

Hi amberly, I I have been cloth diapering for around 5 years or so now. I have tried prefold w/ snappi, wahm diapers, pockets, aio,gerber plastic pants, bumpkins,splendocradle,and fuzzi buns. I liked prefold and plastic pant when They were small.bumpkins are not very absorbant and run large.I like fuzzibns diapers. You can adjust the absorbancey with more inserts. I do have diapers called Angle luvs 1 I think they are on ebay. They are really great diapers. They are alittle less expensive then the others.bumgenis all one size would be nice because You dont have to buy another size.That is nice if You plan to have other children. You would never have to buy another size.I have heard that when people have more than one Child in diapers they use the same diaper on all. That would be great. My twins are almost 3 and wear fuzzibuns med. They have been in this size since They were 1 year still room to grow. They will probably last to potty traing. I would suggest to try a couple types of diapers. Buy a couple diapers a piece see if You like them. I bought 250.00 in bumkins and diasocerd I really didnt care for them much. I have been using Bum Genius on my 13 month old daughter since she was about 2 months old and I LOVE them. They never leak and they are so easy to use and to wash. I would highly recommend them!

Well, it looks like a bunch of bumGenius! lovers here! And that includes me- I have used the bumGenius! one-size on my daughter since birth (she was a big baby- so they weren't too bulky), and I have been very happy with my experience. I use the one-size, but may consider using the AIO's for next baby- now they have pockets so you can add more absorbancy if you want.
The laundering advice from Deb K is not congruent with manufacturers laundering guidelines. The savings of washing your own diapers is amazing compared to disposables... an investment of about $500 for top-of-the-line diapers compared to almost $2500+ for paper and plastic disposables... there is no contest, in my mind for the clear winner. And since your twins are older, you would be fine with about 24 diapers, doing a load every other day.

I've been using prefolds with Wonder-Wraps adjustable covers. They work well. I've never had a blow-out, and only occasionally a leak overnight. So one factor to consider when considering if it takes more time to use cloth is that you spend less time washing dirty clothes. As for the laundry itself, it has become pretty routine. In general, the longest part of laundry is folding, and "folding" diapers is really quick. I just stack up my prefolds - takes a minute.
I've cloth diapered both my kids and I started out by buying a ton of different kinds of diapers on ebay. I feel like I've tried them all. The absolute best is MOTHEREASE brand. I can't say enough about them. No leaks, great covers, and the older babies can't get the covers off. Try them, I know you'll love them.
I use Fuzzi Bunz, and they've worked great so far. The Switch wasn't as dramatic as I thought. Good job mommy!

I started with Fuzzi Bunz and thought they were great...but then I tried Bum Genius One sized pocket....WOW!! They were the best. They were about 2xs as absorbant and never leaked. They were also easy for my husband since they go on like a disposable(velcro). You can order 1 from the website to try them but I am converted. I am due in 7 weeks with our 2nd baby and I plan on buying a few different brands that are smaller for the 1st month or so and then using just the B.G. diapers. If you order from nicki's diapers, they do not charge shipping on pocket diapers. - S.

I tried cloth diapers when my twins were first born, and it turned into more of a hassle for me than using disposable diapers. Granted diapers are bad for the environment and they need to come up with a way to recycle them, but soon you will be running around chasing after all 3 of your kids and twins always go in opposite directions :) (At least mine do) I did however like Kushies because their liner was on the outside and you didn't have to remove it from the inside of the diaper, and they had the velcro tabs so it was almost like having a disposable diaper.
I have 3 kids under 4 years of age with 2 in cloth diapers. I do a load of diapers before bed every other day. I have a variety of types.
I have made diapers covers and folds and love how simple and easy it is to use and to customize. Ok so I had fun with making diapers with different colors/patterns etc. Do you sew? Email me and I will be happy to send you more info.
Kushies: I had the newborn size and they worked well and I just bought some used one from my neighbor in new condition for my toddler and wow are bulky under leggengs. They work well and she is not comfortable in them.

Bumkins: Love them quick easy nice, we refer to them on as cotton baby butt. The cotton does hold stains, but if you take the time they can be sunned out.

Bum Genuis: I really like them a lot they are soft and do not leak and the polyester line does not hold stains. But... with the used ones I got the ends of the tabs curl out and scratch my arm when I hold her or snag on her onsizes and they get hooked onto other diapers in the wash. I have also learned that they take longer to dry completely and they were not fully dried when I had been pulling them out of the dryer so they have a faint mildew smell.

Kissaluvs and never used them more than once or twice
Sweet Cheeks cotton fitted cover and inserts- soft and comfy but they still need a water proof layer.
I also found a great reuse for my dry baby wipes by using them as a liner.
I used the Bum Genius 2.0 and the bamboo ones that needed the cover on my boy. I loved them! I would definitely recommend them to anyone. I also used Kooshies AIOs and was pleased with them, too.

I cloth-diapered my son starting from about age 11 months and it was surprisingly easy. My favorites were the Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genious one size pocket diapers with the microfiber inserts they come with and some hemp inserts for night time and longer car trips. I got a washable waterproof fabric laundry bag to hold the dirties and threw it in with the diapers to wash. There is a lot of great info on the web for how to wash the diapers without using bleach, so washing them is not such an environmental problem. I even found that the fabric bag full of dirty cloth diapers smelled less than the plastic diaper pail full of dirty disposables! I tended to wash them every third day. And my son, tired of the wet feeling he got from the cloth dipes, basically potty-trained himself at about 27 months, so it was worth it just for that. It really was much easier than I expected, I felt good about it, my son looked so cute in those cute-colored diapers, and I saved a ton of money. So good luck!
BUM GENIUS 3.0!! I love these diapers.... they truly are a one size fits all. I started with my newborn and have never had any leaks. They also fit my 3 year old for overnights just great before she was completely night trained. They are very absorbent, come with two different liners and make using cloth as easy as disposables. I do diaper laundry about every 4 days. With twins it might have to be every other day....but the machine does all the work. It takes about 5 minutes to make sure all the liners are out and the velcro tabs are in and then restuffing the diapers after they are dry. My water bill has not increased....I have 3 kids so I was doing laundry pretty frequently anyway.
I have 27 diapers, which is around $450, but I already feel like I have saved tons...I don't even go down the baby aisle in the grocery store. I also made my own wipes by serging squares of flannel, just moisten with water. All my husband and I can say is that we wish we had started cloth diapering sooner!

Did you know that it is illegal in most of the country to dump human waste...it is all supposed to go down the toilet, how many moms using disposables do you know who do that....that's the biggest impact on our environment, it isn't just the diaper!
I have two children and I have always used cloth diapers for them. i have used lots of brands and my personal favorite are fuzzi bunz, If you go to fuzzi bunz direct you can usually find "second quality" diapers for much cheaper. they are still in great condition, usually one of the snaps is a little off center or the sewing is a little bunched up in one place. It took me a long time to even notice where the mistakes on mine were. so worth the discount. i have used bun genius too and they are really good also. my second favorite for sure. the only thing is that they use velcro instead of snaps and my kids could take them off. but I really liked using them as night time diapers. I hope this helps. I think cloth diapers are awesome and sooooo much easier (and cheaper in the long run) than disposables. Better for the baby too. good luck!
Bum Genius 3.0 ALL THE WAY. That is all I can say. The babe goes 12 hours in a single Bum Genius at night and has never had a leak or rash.
Just had to add a couple websites for great cloth diapering tools. Best cloth diapers by far are the Pocket Change diapers at www.mtdiaperstore.com. We've tried all kinds of brands!! I've also found the Happy Heiny's to be a great diaper. Not so impressed with the Bum Genius all-in-one as the water proofing on them breaks down quickly. We use bleach free, biodegradable disposables for my son when traveling and part-time day care otherwise we use cloth and I love them! Aside from the enviro. factor, they're far more absorbent and you can stuff or unstuff to your hearts content. I found hemp to be more absorbent than cotton so when I double stuff (at night) I put the hemp closest to my son's body and the cotton as the outer layer. I also found that velcro fasteners will start to wear out so snap is best though anything 'snap' drives my husband crazy. lol Also using cloth wipes when cloth diapering helps a lot as you just tuck everything together just as when using disposables. The website to find this is www.cottonbabies.com along with a the wipe warmer which can be used for cloth and disposable wipes. Also Allens Naturally Detergent gets diapers clean no problem! For laundering, I do a cold rinse then put in the detergent and do a hot wash followed by another cold rinse. I usually hang dry but now and then I'm in a hurry and need to just throw them in the dryer. Also a little more mess and smell is to be expected with cloth diapering so if that's something you simply can't handle then you won't want to go the cloth diapering route. I myself love it! Oh and check out the Magic Stick for diaper rash at the Diaper Company (mtdiaperstore.com). I just put it on everytime I change a diaper and we're at 9 mos. with never a rash yet! I too am looking into cloth diapering-I have 9 month old twins. I have done a fair amount of research, but finally just asked on my twin message board what was best to use and got an overwhelming response towards the BUM GENIUS. From what i understand they grow with the child, easy to clean, don't stain, and none of them have ever had a problem with diaper rash. The one piece of advice I was given-besides to definetly switch, was not to use fabric softner when washing them-makes them less absorbant. Anyway I hope these work for you.

Lots of neat feedback here! I enjoyed reading the responses to your question. I've heard good things about BumGenius too, but haven't used them. We went the super economical route of prefolds and covers. In the early days (of runny output!), infant prefolds with Thirsties covers worked very well. Now I use regular-sized prefolds with super-simple Dappi diaper pants. Prefolds/covers are very simple to wash and dry, too. RE: some ladies' comments about hygiene, I think a hot dryer probably kills whatever bacteria make it through the hot wash. If you can hang diapers on a line during the summer, the sun takes care of that beautifully (including stains!). RE: the ease of cloth diapering vs. disposables, cloth diapering hasn't been a problem for us. It means a few extra loads of laundry a week, but that's not such a trial. The savings more than make up for that in my opinion. Kudos for looking into cloth, and blessings!

We have been using cloth diapers for nearly 2 years now with our two kids. We use a diaper service for a few reasons: 1. I deal with enough poop as it is, I don't need to have to try to clean it out of diapers too! 2. The diaper service is so easy. They drop off clean diapers every week and we give them a bag full of dirty diapers in exchange. 3. The cost is about the same as disposable diapers and in fact, our service here in Fort Collins gave us a discount for the second child (so we pay less than $20 a week for diapers). 4. Finally, the service seems like the most environmental option because I don't have to rinse the dipaers at all, I just put them into my diaper pail. Then the service washed a bunch of them at once so it uses less water. Water can be cleaned over time but you can't make a disposable diaper disappear from a landfill.

Oooh. I love my bumgenius one size! They are so easy to use, and don't leak, and no rashes. In fact, the only issue that I had with them is that they are pretty bulky on a baby (but I understand that they now have a newborn insert included in the diaper's regular price). Since your twins are almost one, that shouldn'tbe an issue.
To wash them, I just shake out any poo that will fall out into the toilet, then throw the whole (separated)diaper in the washer full of cold water with a little detergent and 1/2 cup of baking soda. When the washer is full of diapers (2-3 days), I run the load, then rerun it with hot water. The tabs don't curl and get brittle (they will still work fine if they do get brittle) if you hang the covers to dry.
