Cleaning Vomit Out of Shoes

So...the only good pair of shoes my DD currently owns, she vomited on today. Any tips for cleaning them? I rinsed them out at the store (yeah, it's been that kind of day) but they still smell funny.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Last night I rinsed them out again, and might try the washer today if the Lysol doesn't help. They just HAD to be the Stride Rites. Thanks for the sympathy. It was a "day" and today she's just well enough to be grumpy.

Baking soda, or white vinegar, depending on the material. Leave them outside or in a garage if you can.

Sorry - we've all had days like that!

I have washed every pair of shoes my boys have owned. leather, cloth whatever. Never ruined a pair. Probably at least 50 pairs. Why not wash them in the washer--at least try before you throw them out.....

Toss them and get new shoes.

Not worth the time and $$ to attempt to fix.

I'm sorry for your bad day!

No advice, just so sorry for the bad day! At least they weren't your good shoes!
I love it when kids tap you on your shoulder and proceed to throw up on your shoes!

If the soles are the reason for the smell, soak them in vinegar or soak 2 paper towels in vinegar and put them in the shoes. I did this when my dd vomited and got on her shoes. Also had to soak the car seat cover.

Good advice so far. I'd go with baking soda and then a spritz of Febreeze.

Sorry you had a rough day... hope tomorrow is better!

I would probably just throw them out..
Every time they get wet or hot, they will probably release that odor..

So sorry your day was so rough..

I would sprinkle them heavily with baking soda, and seal them in a plastic bag for a day or two. That should absorb any smell. (I would make sure they are dry first though...)

Definitely try the washing machine. I've done this for years. It beats tossing them.

Working as a nurse I had a wide variety of bodily fluids spilled on my shoes (yuck, I know). As I spent a lot of good shoes that would last me 12 hour shifts, I washed them a lot. Toss them in the washer, they should be fine!

It depends on what the shoes are made out of. Are they cloth? Leather? Suede? I would probably clean them differently depending on that.

Baking soda and vinegar come to mind, but again, it depends on the material and whether or not it got inside the shoe or just the outside.

Toss them in the washer. Then sit them upside down on a heater vent. They'll air dry overnight.

if they are tennis shoes you can soak them in Ariel (powdered detergent and such a nice smell) then wash in the machine.Sorry just too late, although you could still try to handwash with it.

sometimes you're just screwed. but before tossing them, i'd definitely try running 'em through the washer. it's worth a shot, right? vinegar in the rinse.
sorry you had THAT day!

I wash all my kids' Stride Rite shoes, even the light-up ones. Never had a problem. Just let them air dry or take a hair dryer to them. I'd add a little vinegar to the load with your regular detergent to get rid of the smell.
Good luck!

High grade tea tree oil will break down the enzymes in the throw up. Put 10 or 15 drops in a bucket of water and soak for several hours. Then wash in the washing machine. It should be good to go unless the water messes up the shoes...

Hope this helps!
