Cleaning the Training Potty & Wiping

My daughter is starting to potty train. she prefers the little potty to the big one. We have had some success on it, so I'm going to go with it for a while and hope to transition to the big potty eventually. Anyway, here's my question, how do you clean your little potty? How do you keep it sanitary and not have a 10 minute cleanup routine after each use. BTW we have a potty with several different layers - the cushy seat, the bowl, the handles and rim, and then the base that supports the whole thing - seems excessive and like a germ trap. Also, I have a little girl and am wondering how to teach her to wipe? let her do it or not?

What can I do next?

I do the same: Pour in toilet, rinse and slosh with a little water, pour in toilet. I've discovered that leaving a little bit of water in the bowl helps keep the smell down (just like in the toilet) and it helps keep the poop from "sticking" to the bottom--gross! About once a week I wipe down the potty with bleach wipes or other multi-surface cleaner and then rinse in the tub.

As for wiping, I do let my girl wipe with a small piece of toilet paper, but then I wipe her with fresh t.p. (and a baby wipe if there are any drips or poop). At her daycare, they just let the kids wipe themselves, but I do try to show her how to be a little more thorough.

Good Luck! It's great once you get to the point where you don't need diapers/pull ups anymore!

When our son peed, I took the little bowl and dumped it into the toilet. Then I used a little water from the sink, swished it around and dumped it into the toilet. Done!

Urine is sterile, so I do not believe there are any germs to worry about. When she poops, you might want to do a little more. I just used baby wipes to clean out the bowl after I had gotten rid of the poop.

I really don't think anything is getting into all those crevices you're talking about. Relax! It's not like our own toilets get cleaned that thoroughly after each use.

I dump it, rinse it and wipe it down with a clorax clean up cloth. I wish they had those when my own kids were small! Let her wipe herself when she pees front to back, not back and forth. When she is older she can wipe when she poops and you check her until she starts getting it good.

I used to dump it into the toilet, take it downstairs to the laundry tub and clean/sanitize it there....it IS gross! Have you tried sitting her backwards on the big toilet? It doesn't take long to get really sick of cleaning those potty chairs! (And repeat this mantra: "Urine is sterile, urine is sterile.....")

You could avoid the whole mess and go with a seat cover that fits the regular toilet. We used the Baby Bjorn one and it was great. We used foldable one for travel - fits in the diaper bag, quick wipe down with a wipe and done.
