Cleaning Surface of Iron

While I was ironing the other day, my iron started to stick to a shirt (that I'd ironed with no problem before). Then I noticed that was a gunky buildup forming on the surface of the iron. I can't use it now (it sticks to the fabric I'm ironing). I guess I need to clean it off, but I don't know what to use. Water won't get it off (it's kind of sticky), but I don't want to use Goo-Gone because then it will get on my clothes when I iron. Any suggestions on cleaning the surface? By the way, it's a stainless steel surface.

I used plain vinegar when I had this problem. I used to use spray starch and always got a gunky build up. I don't use it anymore and wipe my iron every couple of months with vinegar just to keep it clean. it won't harm the surface and cleans right off. Just dip a cloth (old washcloth would work well) in some vinegar and wipe the iron off.

Do NOT use steel wool to clean your iron. It will scratch the surface making it easier for gunk to stick to it. I learned the hard way.

I haven't ironed much for years but I think that I used to put salt on brown paper and ironed over it with a hot iron.

When I discovered iron cleaner in a tube I always used that. I think that there are other brands beside Rowena but it's been years since I bought any.

I also think that using vinegar on a warm - hot sole plate would work too.

There is a kit you can buy at Target by Rowena that cleans the iron perfectly.

Try to iron it off with the high setting on an OLD wet towel. That's how I clean gunk off of mine.

Use a stainless steel pad and do it when it is cold. The pad will clean it good and no residue left.
