Cleaning Leather

My Mother was given a very nice soft leather purse, it had been used by someone who smoked. She can't get rid of the cirgarette smell. She's tried soda, febreeze, hanging it outside for hours, the smell is still powerful. It would be a shame to throw away the purse but if she can't get rid of that smell, she can't use it. Any suggestions?

Try getting some charcoal granules for fish tank filters from the pet store. Put it in a nylon stocking/sock - a couple of cups of it-and then put that in the purse for a couple of days. (The charcoal will come thru the nylon some so line the purse w/ tissue paper first.) It works with really stinky tennis shoes so maybe it will work with cigarette smoke- it is a very powerful odor absorber. If the smell is on the outside-maybe put the purse in a closed box w/ some of the charcoal- again make sure it doesn't touch it, a little tissue separating the leather from the charcoal- and see if that helps.

Try stuffing it with loosely crumpled newspaper and a dryer sheet. Wrap it in a cotton pillowcase and then a plastic bag. Leave it like this for several days, changing the newspaper and dryer sheet daily, until the odor is gone. This works for suitcases, and I did this for a stinky fur hat, maybe it will work on a purse.
Good luck.

In hotels, they use a product Airlift (Spartan Airlift Smoke & Odor Eliminator)to get smoke out. It is supposed to be safe to use on leather.

Three other options:
1) Put about a tablespoon full of dry coffee grounds (right from the can), put in an envelope and seal and place in purse and let sit for several days or as long as necessary.

2) Sprinkle with baking soda, stuff with dryer sheets, and wrap in dryer sheets. Leave for at least 24 hours.

3) Or, you can take to a shoe hospital, yes they work on bags and will be able to professionally clean the bag. This will take some $, so you may want to get a quote first.

Good luck!

I had the same problem with my Louis Vuitton purse.
I had it hang up outside for 24 hrs. (literally) and that helped. I did a google search for Heloise Hints for my info. Check it out for other ideas.
Good luck.

Try taking it to a place like Austin Shoe Hospital. I had a purse that was packed in my suitcase with some items that had been wrapped in newspaper. We bought the items at the marina so I didn't realize until we got home and I unpacked that the newspaper smelled like fish. So did everything else in the suitcase. They were able to clean it and get the fishy smell out. Good luck!

Go to Petsmart or similar and get "Simple Solution"....a solution that is made to get the pet-urine smell out....it has a pleasant baby-powder smell and gets out EVERY odor imagineable. I used it on my car leather and floors when it got wet inside and moldy-smelling and it got it out when nothing else would. Good luck!

Take it to US Shoe Hospital. They specialize in cleaning leather. If she does not have one, you could call them and ask them for their advice and probably go by the products from them to send to your mom.

How about getting it dry cleaned? That's what I did with my leather coat when it got smoky from visiting a relative who smoked.

If it is actual leather, and not a suede type material, try murphy's oil soap..that kills the smell, and conditions. Good Luck.

Have it taken to a place where they can put it in a ozone room. After that have it cleaned by a F. technician. www.WeRepairLeather.com
