Cleaning Blinds

Hi,
upon careful inspection I noticed my blinds need to be cleaned. Back in MS where the water was soft, my mom used to take them down and hose them off outside. I don't think I can do that here because of the hard water. Does anybody have a better way to get all the dust off blinds that look (and probably haven't been) like they haven't been cleaned in 3 years?

As a former professional house cleaner, I would definitely recommend vinegar and water. Safe for any color or composition. Instead of leaving the blinds on the window and trying to clean each slat, I pull my down and "rest" them in the bathtub. Just a cup of vinegar to 3-4" of warm water for about 20 mins in the tub is all you'll need to remove 99% of dust and grime! If you have a handheld shower head, that makes rinsing a breeze. If not, just use a large cup to rinse them with clean water. Good luck!

L.,

I used to clean my blinds with windex and paper towels. Turn them facing down and clean and then turn them up and clean. Good luck on cleaning.

I always use a self made cleaning agent. Vinegar + warm water will get out anything. It's also not harmful to children if injested. This cleaning agent can be used with a lot of things even, from mopping the floors, to cleaning out the stains in a coffee maker. Try it :) Use maybe 1 cup vinegar to 3 cups warm water. If you can smell the vinegar it's too strong so add more warm water. Good luck!

Hello L.,

someone who may be able to help you with this question is Claudia Covian from Gotch Covered Blinds. I purchased blinds from her company a few months ago and they are quite knowledgeable. They are not pushy sales people and will most likely give you free advice without a sales pitch. Vicky M.

Soak them in the tub with some Borax (by the laundry detergent). If they just need dusting, they make a vacuum attachment for that.

Hi,
Are they metal or wood? If they are metal, you can take them down and use soapy water in the bathtub and let them soak for a few minutes. Then, just drying with a towel. Or, you can take an old sock and put it over a dowel, a flat piece of wood (like to stir paint) or a cooking utensil handle and clean them one by one by putting the old sock in soapy water and going through one by one.hope this helps! or if you have one, you could use a handheld steamer to clean them.

I've always just vacuumed them off. Then, if there are any stubborn spots, I'll wipe them off with a rag sprayed with some Pledge.

Happy cleaning!

Use ordinary soft, clean dust cloths, chemically treated dust cloths, vacuum cleaner brush attachments, or other available ordinary household aids. The paint surface of the slats is quite smooth and dust is easily brushed off if done at regular intervals.

To vacuum, use the brush dust head attachment and tilt the slats first up, then down (but not entirely exposed) to reach the entire top and bottom surfaces.

To dust, use a soft clean cloth or chemically treated dust cloth and tilt the slats as above.

To wash, use a damp cloth or sponge and mild detergent. Use warm or cold water - NOT hot water. Tilt the slats as above. Protect the floor or sill from excess water. The blind can also be taken down, placed in a bath tub of mild soapy water, then rinsed clean, wiped dry, or allowed to dry completely in the open air.
