How do you get plastic from a burner? I accidentally turned on the wrong burner, had a plastic container of food sitting on the burner that was turned on......it melted everywhere, and I'm having a hard time getting it off. Any suggestions?
Thanks so very much!!!

What can I do next?

Hi -

Here are responses to a similar question from mampedia - http://www.mamapedia.com/questions/16068359043864854529

the poster said she "... was able to safely remove it with no damage by ... freezing and scraping.. WD-40 and more scraping.. and burned off the residue."

one though may sure you vent when burning off residue (plastic fumes are toxic).

How to Clean Melted Plastic Off a Stove Burner (Electric or Gas Standard Cook Tops) http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_melted-plastic-off-s...
Step 1
Allow the burner to cool completely, then use a paring knife to lift off any larger areas of hardened plastic.
Step 2
Turn on the ventilation fan, and turn the burner on high to burn off any remaining thin strands of film that you couldn't get with the knife.
Step 3
Using the paring knife, you can also scrape off melted plastic while the burner is still on. Just remove as much plastic as possible while it is still pliable, then turn the burner on high and burn off the remaining residue.
Step 4
Working with gas burners, it may be easier to remove the plastic in the sink, with hot water and a scratch pad. Don't forget to allow the burner to cool completely before attempting to move it.

Good luck!

I would say, heat it back up and use a piece of steel wool or S.O.S. But here is a tip I saw on TV to clean the stove top and burner from the icky brown res left on the gas stoves. Sprinkle the area with laundry detergent and then wet it. Let it set for a bit and then wipe it off. You will see the detergent absorbing the orange/brown grease.

If your stove is a flat cook top, there is a stone that you can use that is made especially for that. I wish I could remember where we bought it. I did the same thing about a month ago, and we were able to remove the plastic easily.

New burners aren't that expensive and you may want to look into it. I left an iron cooling on a burner........the metal melted so much it looked like a giant chocolate kiss and was adhered to the burner. Replacing the burner was easiest.

I'd vote for just buying a replacement burner coil. They shouldn't be very expensive. You'd just pull the yucky one out, pop in the new.. good to go.

I did that just the other day and I used a Mr Clean Magic Eraser. It came right off. The plastic was just smeared though. There wasn't a thick glob stuck to the stove.
