After church the subject of stained sock bottoms came up. I mentioned that I am always to tight to cough up the money for Tide and a few ladies started telling me of the wonders of Oxyclean. I decided to give it a try on their recommendation but when I went to Walmart yesterday I found that it was over 5 dollars a bottle and realized that by the time I bought that and regular laundry soap I may as well buy Tide. After staring at the shelf in dismay for a bit I noticed a bottle that said oxyclean claimed to be a refill bottle for 4 something so I bought it, but when I got home I realized that it was a bottle of oxyclean STAIN REMOVER and there are no for use in washing machine instructions on the back. I am not sure if it is the same as the other oxyclean stuff and maybe just more concentrated or if I should just not open it take it back and either cough up the money for the regular stuff or make do with yucky sock bottoms?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all the tips and time spent writing them. I got some good ideas and I am looking forward to trying them. I had never heard of homeade laundry soap before, I plan to investigate. Also, I like the tip about getting the generic from Aldi's and the tip on how to get the best results from oxyclean. I also liked the point about occasional new socks not being that expensive in comparison to some of these treatments. Thank you so much for all the advise and other tips on getting stains out you all are great.

I have a couple of suggestions for you to try, 1 if you have a dollar general store close to where you live pick up a bottle of awesome, yep thats what it is called an only a $1.00 for one its a great degreaser also on anything that is greasy; 2. You can try soaking his socks in vinegar water make it heavy on the vinegar an then wash as usual, my daughter buys the oxiclean powder for use in her wash but I like the old fashioned way better. Best of luck.

I hate to tell you this, but even if you went back and got the Oxyclean, you would not be happy with the results if you are just going to sprinkle it in your laundry loads. At first, I thought that you could just put it in your regular laundry, but I had no results. I thought that I was wasting my money, but I ended up trying it again later when my son's shirt had chocolate stains and grape juice stains. I had tried everything to get the stains out, but nothing worked. I decided to try the Oxyclean and I was just going to soak it all night. The stains were gone by morning. Now I know how to use Oxyclean. You have to use really hot water, and soak it for at least a few hours. What I do is fill up my washing machine with the clothes that I want to soak, and then I turn it off and let all of it soak for a few hours. It does turn your socks white, but you have to soak them in it. Hope that helps. I just didn't want you to be frustrated with the results like I was, because you really can have great results if you do it the right way.

I was going to suggest generic oxyclean at the dollar store or the real stuff at sams is much cheaper. the spray is great too though to put on specific stains. I also mostly go the baking powder/vinegar route, and use oxyclean for rather stained stuff. I just figure it's cheaper to get new socks once in awhile than to worry about my sock stains.

I use old fashioned bleach for our white socks that tend to get dirty. It's cheap and effective. I also swear by Spray N Wash with Resolve Power. It gets everything out, even blood! I just spray it on the stain before I put it in the laundry basket and let it sit until laundry day-works great. I've thought about trying Oxy Clean too, but am trying also to keep out costs down and haven't sprung for it yet! Good luck!

R., the Oxyclean that I use is in a tub and is a powder, not sure how much it cost. And I've haven't used tied on my clothes in years. Not since I was a little girl (Ok it wasn't me useing it then, but my Grandma). Tide made me itch. We use the Arm and Hammer laundry soap and have been very happy with it. But I'm also bleach happy and if it's white - I bleach it, so my sock are pretty clean (I also only buy white socks for my kids). But with the OxyClean I put a scoop in with my soap for my kids cloths and it really helps get the little stuff out that I usually miss and with my cloths it helps with the splatters from cooking that always seem to happen when I'm wearing my favorite t-shirt. Good luck!!

I am pretty much out of the stain game myself, so I can't help with that, but I thought that I might be able to save you money in a different way. I make my own laundry detergent. It is wonderful and very economical. You can find a ton of recipes online. For about $10, I was able to make 10 large jugs of detergent. It is very easy to do. Just search the web for directions. This might help offset some of the cost if you really need extra stain fighting; however, I find that my mix works pretty well! :)

I swear by baking soda. Mix a little with your laundry soap (will have to add water if you use powder) and throw it in the wash. Stains are gone and baking soda is CHEAP! I add about 1/4 cup of baking soda to every load, which keeps things bright. I also add white vinegar instead of fabric softener and our clothes come out soft as can be. And it's CHEAP!!

I would suggest spending the extra money on Shout to spot treat stains (you don't have to use too much, so if you buy the REALLY BIG jug it lasts forever!), and then you can buy whatever kind of laudry detergent you want, or whatever is on sale, etc. Shout gets everything out!
