Betty Crocker has a cookie mix. i love it! I use the sugar cookie mix for Christmas cookies every year and everyone thinks their home made. Their only like 1.50 at walmart's baking isle.

Hi - I don't know if you have to have a traditional cookie but if not here is an idea. I am using the traditional rice krispie treats recipe and then using a heart shaped cookie cutter you cut out heart shapes. They would be very sturdy and easy to decorate. You can even put a few drops of red food coloring in the marshmallow mix to make them pink. Just an idea.

When my son had his Valentines Party last year. We just went and got sugar cookies from the Wal Mart bakery that were already made. Then we got a couple of white icing tubs and strawberry icing. We got different kinds of sprinkles and got some candy hearts and let them decorate them.

Hi D.,
Using half shortening, half butter, makes a more sturdy cookie for decorating. So if a recipe calls for 1 cup of margarine or butter-- use 1/2 cup margarine or butter, and 1/2 cup of shortening.
As others suggested, using a basic sugar cookie recipe is probably best for decorating. A tip -- rolling the dough out is harder to do when it's already been chilled. It's easier to roll the dough out FIRST on a sheet of waxed paper. You can put several layers on top of each other, dough, paper, dough, paper, etc. Place them stacked on a cookie sheet, THEN let them chill in the fridge. Then you can pull out a layer, cut your cookies, pull out another layer, cut them, etc-- without the dough starting to get too soft.
It's nice to have homemade cookies-- but doing cut out cookies takes alot more work and more time. As someone else suggested, you can get them already made at Walmart- I think you can get two dozen for $5.00. As they say, time IS money.
That $5 is WAY worth it, instead of the 10 minutes to make the dough, the overnight in the fridge to stiffen, and the hour or so to cut them all out and bake them.
As a side note and totally unrelated... you mentioned in the "A little about me" section that you're married, with a 5 and 12 year old, to a man "who can finish a thing he starts"...
well, he's still married to you, right? :)

D.,
I would just make a sugar cookie and use a cookie cutter that is the shape of a heart for the kids to put icing on. I dont think you could go wrong on that one. I would also like to suggest this site.. www.familyfun.com This site may have a few things you could try.

One thing I have seen that looks so cute is pre-made cookies in a package with frosting and sprinkles in there. It's like a package of 8 cookies and enough stuff to decorate them. I saw them at Wal-Mart and am planning on getting them for my daughters party. GOod luck!
