Classes for a 2 1/2 Year Old

I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter that is in love with music. She has a musical ear that is truly beyond me, and likes anything from classical to rock (favorite songs these days are Funiculi Funicula (the Pavarotti and Acqua version) and Mama Mia - she actually sings the lyrics! She can recognize a song within the first few notes - way faster than her momma - and can listen to music all day long. She also enjoys dancing, and when a good song comes up, she wants us to stop whatever we are doing and get on our feet to dance.

Neither my husband nor I have a strong musical background, but I want to encourage her to explore this interest. Does anyone have a suggestion of appropriate music or dancing lessons for this age group? Is it too early to start her on an instrument (and if OK, which? where?). How about dancing/ballet or other?

All thoughts welcome. Thank you so much for being a great support network.

All the best for the holidays and new year,

E.

You should check out Cliff Drive Park Music School. They have a great Music Enrichement Program for younger students that goes all year, and they specialize in music enrichment and instrument instruction. The teacher is very warm-hearted and friendly and the kids are always excited about what they are learning. You can find contact info on the website: www.cliffdriveparkmusicschool.com

Hi E,
I'm not sure where you live, but there is a WONDERFUL music studio in Costa Mesa called Kinderarts. Here is the link: artsforkids.com/psmafall.asp They primarily focus on on music and rhythm, and as the kids get older they can take instrument lessons. I was quite impressed with this program. I took my 18 month nephew and he LOVED it. If you don't live nearby, I'm sure if you "google" music arts lessons for children and type in your area something will come up.

Wow, funny I should read this question right now! I just attended a "field trip" with my 5yo to a "Music to grow on class" and it was fantastic!! The instructor is Kathy Lucey and I guess she is very well known for her ability to work with children of all ages to teach the basics of music appreciation, etc. She talked about her classes and said she does different series starting from infant all the way up to teen (so she does have students that have stayed with her all the way thru)Anyway, it was a really cool class with lots of movement, simple instruments, singing voices, etc I highly recommend it and it sounds like your daughter would be a perfect fit!! I saw you are in Aliso Viejo so this would work for you, she teaches in Laguna Niguel and here is a link to the LN Recreation website to see her classes and how to sign up: There is a Music to Grow on class and also one for the family...

Hope that works for you! :-)J
