If you are talking about Clark County NV. I'm sorry but I would have to say yes. There are certain areas that are better then others it depends on the Regional Area you are in, even though it is one school district it is actually like 5 different one because each region is different. It is hard here especially for kids that need extra helps or may have disabilities it is hard to get the district to respond or allow your child to be tested, they fight it all the way. I will say that there are some good teachers out there who want to help kids and do more but are also stopped by the administration or the district or the animal. Part of the problem here is the growth has been so fast and no one was prepared and the money is not there and what is is spent wayto much in administration and so forth. Also all of the Federal money is sent to the constant building of schools and so forth and trying to keep up with the No child left Behind for those schools to avoid becoming a Title A-1 school.

Hi A.,

I was an elementary teacher at one time, and we actually took my daughter out of a private school and put her into a public school. The private school was a disaster. Lots of money and my daughter didn't fit the mold they had established for their students. I've heard the same from other parents that have had their children in private schools. Expensive and if your child isn't totally obedient, you're going to have problems. They now have their children in public schools, and they're doing much better. That said, the public schools aren't without their problems--I'm not sure there is a "perfect" situation. What I do know, from being a teacher, is that the children who do the best are the ones whose parents are most involved. Like another momma said, if you make sure they're prepared to learn, that they do their homework, you're involved, they'll do well. The best private school in the world won't make a difference if parents aren't involved.

My 2 children have been in school here since Sept. 2000. We might have just been blessed with good schools and teachers, but we are happy with our child's education. I try not to look at "overall" test scores because I feel there's too much room for error (student is bad test taker, student started off on bad morning, poor test taking conditions, etc). However, I have some friends that are teachers, and after talking with them, seeing some news stories, reading some articles and listening to my children, the "No Child Left Behind Act" has got to go!! The teachers are too regimented on what they MUST do, it hasn't proven to help the student or the schools, I just think it's a waste. Now, as ALL parents should do, attend open houses, meet the teachers, learn about homework policy from each teacher, and then follow up with your child, stay on top of them, ask questions and be there for support. I have found THAT to be the key to a child's success in school. Comments? M.

My son went to Basic HS and my 2 girls are now in Brown JHS. I know what these schools and our elementary schools are like. I have nothing but high praise for our school administrators. Parent involvement is key. You know the old saying, you get back what you put in. All 3 of my kids were/are involved in sports. It doesnt have to be sports, but there needs to be some extracurricular activity that is a passion of your kid to spark the interest in school.

I dont really have anything to compare the CCSD to, and I think it's fine. That said, there must be parental involvement - but that goes for any school district.

That has been a serious concern of mine for awhile now. I do know that the school district is over crowded and that they are undefunded. I don't think anybody could possibly say it's a great system. However, I do know of several parents, whose children are of different ages and in different areas of town, who say it really isn't that bad. My sister, whose 13 year old son is doing exceptionally well, made a very good point. Too many parents are not doing thier part to foster their children's education. As a parent, it is up to you to teach your child the importance of school, working hard and following the rules. It is up to the parents to ensure that their child completes their homework and does their studying. It is up to the parents to ensure their child gets enough rest and eats right so that they are rested and properly nourished for school. It is up to the parents to make sure that their child is held responsible at home for his misbehavior in school. My daughter is 3.5 years old and while I haven't decided for sure whether or not we'll go private or public for her schooling, I'm leaning toward at least giving the public schools a chance. If she doesn't do well or I'm not satisfied, I can always switch.

I used to work for the school district before I became a stay at home mom. I feel the school district has some peoblems that they can and should improve on. One being a new Superntendent. This one is just sucks. and the other main one is our district is wayyy to big and they should split up the district in to if not 4 at leat 2 differnt districts. I know other states that do this and it has proven to work very well. I know that we have differnt reagions, to make the district mor effenciet, it needs to be split. I just hope that this happens befor my son starts school in 3 years. Have a great day. :o)
