We are looking for a church in the Lake Highlands area. We are in our early 30's and have a 4 month old. We are looking for a church that the congregation is around our age and has a strong children's program. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I go to Watermark Community Church near 75 and 635. It is a fabulous church with lots of families your age, but it is big. If you are looking for a smaller church, both North Highlands Bible Church (near Lake Highlands High School) and Fellowship Bible Church (near 75 and Park) are great. I used to attend FBC and it is wonderful! I left because I am a single mom and there was no singles activities/single parent ministry. NHBC has a fantastic VBS each summer that my kids just won't miss. My knowledge of that church is limited, but the volunteers at that church and the level of the involvement of the youth during VBS week is just amazing. I get a warm welcoming feeling when I enter that church.

Best of luck!

I go to Wilshire Baptist Church on Abrams near Mockingbird. There is an active group of people in every age group from young couples to retirees. They have a very strong MOPS (Mother's of Preschoolers) program, an excellent Mother's Day Out program and lots of preschool and children's activities. In the summer, they have Vacation Bible School, Cooking Camp, Sports Camp and Theater Camp for 5 year olds and up. There is a variety of Adult Sunday Schools to choose from and they have a strong Youth program.

This is not your typical Baptist church. At least half of the congregation came from other denominations - Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Church of Christ, etc. Many couples that have two different religious backgrounds have found that Wilshire works for both of them. We are very moderate and do not belong to the Southern Baptist Convention. Example: we have women as deacons and in other leadership roles. The service is traditional - organ music, hymns and liturgical. There are no guitars, drums or video screens, so if you prefer that type of service, you might be disappointed.

Many of the kids go to Lake Highlands public schools, Dallas public schools, private schools, but there a large number from other surrounding areas like Richardson, Garland, Rowlett, etc. Because Wilshire is so unique, many people are willing to drive a ways to attend. We have about 900 to 1,200 on Sunday, so it is a mid-size church. Not a mega church, but not small either.

Hi B. -- Like Kari R., my family also attends Watermark and we love it! They have a contemporary service with great music, casual attire, and pastors who offer messages that are authentic and biblically based. It's a church full of imperfect people who want to pursue Christ. They have child care and children's programs during the worship service, and there are many opportunities to get involved. Go to www.watermark.org for more information; you can even watch past messages.

Also, Watermark holds an annual baptism service that is truly inspiring. In the past it was held at a park, but this year it will be at the Watermark campus at 9am on May 15 if you'd like to come check it out.

As much as I'd love for you to visit Watermark, my best suggestion is for you to pray for God's guidance to find your church home. Blessings to you and your family! : )

We just joined Lake Highlands UMC. It is on the corner of McCree and Plano Rd. We are new to the area also. We have a 3yr old and one on the way. We have really enjoyed the services. They have contemporary and regular style (I cant think of the correct name for that service). They have a very strong kids program. Check it out, visit a time or two. We love it.

Good luck!
