My daughter is now 3 and had tubes put in at age 1 for chronic ear infections. She has been having problems sleeping thru the night. She slept thru the night until age 2. My doctor said that some children with ear problems have sleeping problems. I just wonder if anybody else has a similar problem?

What can I do next?

The sleeping problem could be because of all the noises they hear more now that the tubes are in...if it is chronic pain the the tubes are being rejected by the body...put something in there room that would drowned out the sound of the outside world...my partners son had tubes put in and his speech improved greatly and we did not have to many problems with him sleeping....but we did notice that things were more noisey to him now that he could hear better..

My son had recurring ear infections and I finally found out that it was when I had him on whole milk, as opposed to lowfat milk. His dad and I drank lowfat, so we would try him on it. He seemed to do fine. Then my MOM found out I had him on lowfat. She blew the roof off and insisted that I put him BACK on whole, because he needed his fat. (Good point actually) However, every single time I put him on whole milk, he got an ear infection without fail! I experimented a bit and even asked the pediatrician if it could have an effect... They said no, but I couldn't refute the facts; when he was on whole milk, he got an infection which cleared up shortly after I put him back on lowfat.

Now, it could have been that he also had a slight lactose intolerance while he was young.

K.,

Have you tried chiropractic care for your daughter? It worked wonders for my son, he's almost 4. AND no drugs or surgery needed. As a bonuse his nasal allergies even cleared up, when nothing else had helped after almost a year. His nasal symptoms were severe and chronic, although the allergist tested him and tested him and couldn't pinpoint what exactly was causing the problem, and he'd had terrible reactions to allergy medications.

Just wanted to say my daughter is 4 and she has had sleeping problems as well. I was never told that her tubes may be the cause of that. Your not alone.

My son is also now 3, and had tubes put in at 8 months, for chronic ear infections. Have you spoken to your childs ENT doctor or just her Pediatrician?
My son goes one to two times a year for check ups with his ENT doctor. They could be bothering her. I myself had tubes as a child and only had a problem sleeping when the tubes were working their way out of my ear.
They may be growing out or possibly blocked, making for great discomfort.
I would make an appointment w/ her ENT... it can't hurt. :0)
Good luck, earaches are the most painful thing I ever had (next to childbirth of course!!)

Take her off of all dairy products immediately. In a few months you will see the improvement.

My doctor told me that sometimes chronic ear infections are caused by wheat allergies. You can always try taking wheat out of a her diet for a month and see if it helps. My sister did that with her son and it worked. It was that or get the tubes put in. He hasn't had an ear infection since. It's a little hard to do because wheat is in a lot of common foods, like spaghetti and such. You'll need to shop at some specialty stores to get wheat free products.

Good luck.

Wow- you just opened my eyes. Both my sons have had 2 sets of tubes. I've never been told that could be linked to sleeping problems, but it sure makes sense. Especially my 4 year old. I can count on one hand, the number of nights he slept without waking up at all.

my daughter had the same thing but she had tubes done at 2. She still doesn't really sleep at night. Unless i don't let her take naps during the day.

hi, i completely understand what you are going through. my son is now 9 years old and i had to go through the exact same thing for years, until they found out that he had holes in his eardrums. they didn't see them rightaway. they were talking about hearring aids, well i was really upset. he eventually had to go for surgery. they had to cut behind his ears to remove some tissue to plug the holes in his ear. this began when he was only 9 months old, he had tubes done 3 times. and about a year ago, is when things got better. so sleepless nights was all i had. so if you need any information, you can contact me. i will be glad to discuss it with you. i am sorry your child has to go through it.
