Chronic Back Pain?

For the past 4 years I have had back pain and it seems to be getting worse (except when pregnant) It is to the point now that it hurts to lift my kids and sends nerve pain down my left leg if I sit too long (not good when breastfeeding). It is worse in the morning so I do stretches and that seems to help. I'm also working out to lose about 40 pounds-- I know this will help some. I see a chiropractor about once a month or so when the pain is too much to tolerate after that I'm good to go for about a week after seeing her. Has anyone had similar pain and tried a different approach that has worked? I'm open to just about anything. I would love to be able to play with my kids in the floor and not be in pain.

What can I do next?

I agree with Sandy 100%. I, too, have dealt with the problem you descibe on and off for over 10 years. I would like to suggest that you also incorporate deep tissue massage. In my opinion, your muscles can become "trained" to hold your spine in an uncomfortable place which is why the chiropractic manipulations only help for about a week (same for me). I think our muscles unfortunately try to put the spine back to where it is used to being--the uncomfortable place. Does that make sense? Bottom line is, I've had better success when getting massages whenever I can AND going to the chiropractor. I hope this helps!

Love the advice- esp. the chiro and yoga. Unfortunately I have had two spinal fusions, so I know how upsetting and frustrating it can be to not be able to pick up your child. The pain could be the sciatica nerve or a disc pushing on a different nerve. I have nerve damage at L2-3 that causes the outside of my left thigh to be completely numb. Anyway, I will add that they have nerve and muscle stimulators out there. I'd ask your chiro about it. I'd also ask about a cold laser. I would NOT recommend a nerve block (that's what caused my nerve damage). There are many scary orthopedic docs I have gone to around this area and I can give you the name of a good one if you want it. Taking a vitamin B complex will help with the nerve pain. Taking krill or cod liver oil will help decrease the inflammation and I'd stay away from sugar. I also have a great massage therapist: Becky Rechnitzer ###-###-####. If you need more info just let me know! Good luck to you, you are doing great!

Sounds like your sciatic nerve has pressure on it because your back is out of place. when you go to the chiropractor, he puts your back in place and gradually through the week it moves back. I have chronic back pain. Before I had two sets of twins and lost all time to care for myself, I used to swim a lot to build up the muscles around the back safely and that would help to relieve the pain. Also you might consider going to a physical therapist that specializes in sports injuries (or a doctor) and get some exercises specific to building the muscles around the back. Stop sleeping on your back or stomach; sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs to support your hip; you can put pillows behind and in front of you to give the feeling of sleeping on your back or stomach. Move to as flat a surface as you can stand; I sleep on the floor. If none of that helps, you may have to go to a doctor to treat the problems with your sciatic nerve. good luck to you.

I had severe back issues, esp. with baby #3, I couldn't even push the stroller and after birth if I sat on the floor I couldn't stand. I had 2 herniated disks, an unstable pelvis and very weak abs. I did one year of Physical therapy and it was god sent. I reconstructed my pelvis stability and it made all the difference in my back. I still have the herniated disk, but not as protruded as they were. My orthopedic is a olympic MD and he believes in a more conservative approach. I only used advil when needed. After a year of PT I was rear ended and saw a chiro straight 3x a week for one month and felt great. I now workout almost daily and my back is the strongest it has felt in years. Focus on that pelvic stability before you attempt any hard anything.

Hello V.,

looks like your chiropractor need to take a closer look and develop a treatment plan. does he give you exercizes to do at home? once a month is not enough. maybe you need once/week for a few weeks. check your posture. also get a good bra. yes, a non-supportive bra will compound your back pain.

Great responses! The only thing I would add - practice yoga regularly at least 2-3 times a week. You'll forget that you ever had back pain (and you,ll benefit on many other levels too). I should say not every yoga the same and not every teacher approach it the right way. When I moved to TX and was looking for a yoga teacher it took me a while. I went to yoga class in YMCA, what a horrible experience that was! If I would be new to yoga I probably would think that yoga is not for me. What you want is vinyasa flow type in the hot room. In my opinion Baron Baptibte Power Vinyasa Flow is the best, especially for your problem. You can find studio near you on this site: http://www.baronbaptiste.com/pages/affiliate.htm
Wishing you the best.

Well, in my opionion, you are not seeing the chiropractor enough. The other ladies are correct about the muscles moving your spine back to where it was before the adjustment. That is why in the beginning of chiro treatment you have to go so often. Eventually the muscles lose the memory of where they were, and will conform to where they should be, but it takes time. So, for now, you might even have to go 2-3 times a week, so that everytime your body tries to go back to the old, painful spot, you go back in and get adjusted. I also agree that massage can be key. In fact, your chiro should have some massage available to you. It loosens the muscles so that you can be adjusted, and helps with the over all success of treatment. You have to be really committed to make it work, because you should also be doing specific exercises to compliment your chiro treatments. My hubby is a chiro student, so you can tell I take this pretty seriously, and have seen it do wonders for people. Hang in there, you can get better!! ~A.~

I agree w/the other mom's. I too have severe back pain due to 2 accicents that I had which caused me to have torn disks. I've lost a good amount of weight but still in a lot of pain but the deep tissue massages is the only thing that tends to help.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Definitely a sciatic nerve problem. If chiropractor/massage doesn't help, I recommend seeing a spine specialist. Surgery these days to repair disk issues is laproscopic day surgery with much shorter recovery time.
