Hi Ladies,
I am trying to teach my kids some Christmas Carols. They are learning "Jingle Bells" but I would like to teach them a song about christmas or is religious but all the ones I've tried the kids don't really take too. So any advice... is there a song I haven't thought of. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts :)
Thanks in advance!

Here are 2 websites with carols, one is only religious the other is varied, maybe you can find some that you forgot about.
My children love Away in a Manger. We do hand gestures with it as well. Look on-line, you may find more. Or how about a christian CD. Check out focusonthefamily.org.
Good luck
Hi K., I would love to share with you reguarding Christmas songs. What a wonderful way to teach and share with your children what Christmas is all about - The birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. I don't know if you are a Christian or not, but I remember when my son was little
I would but records (that sure dates me! It wasn't that long
ago. My son is 34 now.) But anyway, Colin would love to
listen to Christine music or Bible stories when he would go to sleep at bed time. The radio has stations that play
Christmas music pretty much 24-7 pretty soon. I would recommend WUFL 1030A.M. in the Detroit area. Then the best
thing out there for the kids (and everyone loves even adults)
is Vegitales DVD's. You can purchase them anywhere (Meijer's, Family Christian store etc.). These are stories and songs that teach upstanding character traits. I'm sure
they have Christmas stories and songs too. My neices and nepews love these stories and songs. What a wonderful way to teach our children as when they set by the way going here or there. If you sing along and enjoy, they certainly will
too. Alas, I miss all those old albums. Have a wonderful
Thanksgiving and Christmas. "May it be merry and bright
and may all our Christmas's be white" and filled with the love and knowledge of Jesus. God Bless, K. H.
Dear K.,
Hi! I really enjoyed reading your post. In a society where you barely hear the term "Christmas", I'm thankful for families want to give their children a deeper understanding of Christmas. I would recommend going to the Christian bookstore or online to cbd.com (Christian book distributors). You could also get Christian CHristmas music from the library.
My personal suggestion is to get a "Donut Man" dvd. The Donut man is like a Christian version of Barney and the Christmas dvd would introduce your children to multiple fun, kid approved Christmas songs aaaannnndd tell the Christmas story at the same time. Not to mention they would have hand motions with all the songs (that makes any song memorable and fun for kids!) You can get the donut man online the cheapest. If not, email me @ ____@____.com and I'll lend you my copy (once I find it!)
I'll try to send you some Christmas music titles too later.
Merry Christmas,
J.
Hello. I don't know your style of music or if you are looking for traditional songs, but I am a childcare provider and I've found sometimes changing the beat or the rhythm helps. I also went to a store and bought some Christmas c.d's. Maybe some of your favorite musicians may have some, and you could all learn them and sing them together. Temptations is one of our favorites. Hope I could help a little.
K.,
If you live near a Target you can get a CD with C is For The Christ Child on it. Not sure what other songs it has. You could order it online too if you're not near one.

Start with "Away in a Manger". Show them pictures of Nativity set so they can relate to the baby. Show them how to swaddle a baby (or doll) and explain that the manger substitutes for a crib or cradle. Good luck. And Merry Christmas to you all.
K.,
When my kids were in pre-school they learned "In A Little Stable" - it has some movements that go with. I think you can find the words online.
Also, Third Day's Baby Jesus I think is the name of it is really good too. I agree with the advice to go to a Christian book store or check online.

There is a Christian Group out there called "Go Fish Guys". They are geared toward kids but TOTALLY enjoyable for mom's and dad's too. Their music is simply Awesome!! Here is a link to my blog. I posted one of their Christmas songs there last year and you can play and listen to it.

Here's a link to another one of their great Christmas songs.

I promise you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them.
You can go to Christian stores to get their CD's. They also have many traditional songs on their CD, but with such an upbeat way of harmonizing and singing. You'll love them and so will your kids!
Blessing, and an early Merry CHRISTmas

You could get a childrens Christmas CD. My kids love any song that is sung by other kids!!
Hi K.,
I didn't look at your other replies so i am not sure if you got this idea or not. WNIC (100.3) is playing all Christmas music now. Try putting that on and let the kids listen to that. I do that with my daughter while I give her a bath. She isn't singing along yet, but she knows that it is Christmas music when I turn on the radio. Have fun!!

My daughter (4yo) loves A Very Merry Kidz Bop, part of the whole Kidz Bop series. She's been singing Christmas music since Sept. and knows the words to the songs better than me! We rented it from our local library. Like Katrina said, kids love other kids singing music. Good Luck!
What about away in a manger. That is a classic lullaby
Hi K.,
My son and I were just singing "Holly, Jolly Christmas" today. He also love rudolph, especially because he has seen the cartoon. "We wish you a merry christmas" , at least the chorus is easy and repetative. "Up on the housetop" is fun with the motions you can do. "Let it snow" is another fun one. I found that Trey really picked up on most just by listenting to CDs and the radio.
There is a really fun one that I think is by Brad Paisley, called "James Penguin" that he really likes, too. I am not sure if that is who sings it though.
Have fun!
My kids love "Away in a Manger."
Another good one is Little Drummer Boy. Bob Seger's rendition is awesome and my 2-1/2 year old son loves it! Good luck, K.!

"Away in a Manger" - what a great Christmas song. My kids love that and "Joy to the World".
Hello K., My children are all grown, but I will be facing the same issue soon with my two grandsons. Try your local christian book store, in the childrens section there should be all kinds of ideas, not to mention cd's, vidio's, etc. Good luck, and happy holidays.
I know it's a little longer but The Twelve Days of Christmas is actually a Christian based song. You could probably Google it and find the true meaning behind it. The only other one's I can think of off hand are already mentioned.
Joy to the World
Away in a Manger
As you can tell by all your responses thus far, away in the manager is a good one. My daughter picked up on we wish you a merry christmas in a day...she is 2 1/2. Also silent night is pretty simple, if you just stick to the first couple of lines. I personally don't feel like I have to teach my kids the whole song because some of them are pretty long! I usually just do the first couple of verses and call it good:) Another (nonreligion) is here come santa clause or you better watch out...
Good luck with it and above all, have fun! I can't wait to take my daughter to neighbors houses and have her sing when we deliver gifts (this will be the first year a kid will join me!).
My first Christmas song I think I learned was Away in a Manger.
But seriously, the first thing to teach them is the meaning, the REAL meaning of Christmas. Jingle Bells doesn't celebrate Christmas, but winter. When you get what Christmas is all about in them, maybe they'll take to actual CHRISTmas songs. And Away in a Manger is about A baby in a crude crib. Kids that age can identify with babies, so they might take to it. Coventry Carol is a beautiful one too, so if you learn it and start singing it, maybe they'll want to sing along. The all time favorite, traditional ones have always worked great. But differentiate the songs between snow time fun and the real meaning. Too few do that anymore.
Away in a Manger is my suggestion, too.
There are wonderful cds of music performed by children at Christian book stores.
I agree, go to a Family Christian Bookstore and look in the kids section. Or go online or look in Itunes! I know all the classics are great but my kids really take to something with a fun beat too! Sometimes it's not the classics though, like right now my kids are running around singing "Soul Food" from the kids church christmas program called Cany Cane Lane. Believe it or not, it is about whether you have "filled" yourself with Jesus. It's fun and they love it. I don't know if they "get it" but .....
Away in a Manger! You can do a finger play with some of it too, like the verse " the little Lord Jesus lays down his sweet head", put your hands together on the side of your head and pretend to sleep, etc.!!
Little Drummer boy!!! kids love the rum pum pum pum part...
Hi K.,
The ones I've found easiest to teach young children are: Silent Night, What Child is This, O Little Town of Bethlehem, and of course Away in a Manger.
Blessings,
G.
Try "Mary Did You Know"....my absolute favorite.
