Christmas Gift Advice

My husband and I agreed to not spend more then $30 on each other this year. He asked specifically, for this weird looking screwdriver thing. I think it's a screwdriver. It's a tool of some sort, anyway. He seems to really want it and points out the commercial every time we see it.

He is a really talented artist. His degree, is in sculpture. We haven't had much time, since my 18 month old was born. He hasn't created anything...basically since we got pregnant. We were looking at an artist's website and he started talking about how he has always wanted to try making wire sculptures and how he like to, "In the future, when there is more time." Every so often he talks about how he misses doing some art, but he's happy to take the time and be with our son .He used to make things all the time and has even sold some stuff. He always felt joy and really proud of finishing a piece of art and I feel badly he doesn't have that in his life anymore.
I thought about getting him a wire sculpture book, some wire (it's dirt cheap), & making coupons for uninterrupted art time (just to be cute) However, he seems to be excited about this screwdriver thing.

What do you think? Should I get the screwdriver he REALLY wants, or my other idea? Thanks, in advance for the input!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I don't know why on earth, I didn't think about suggesting the tool to family. Haha!! Thanks!

Be bold...do both! You said the wire art is cheap. It is so important not to let go of what inspires you and brings you great joy because of a new baby. The baby will get more out of daddy if he does what he loves and daddy already sounds like a great one so let him know it's ok to take some "me" time.

Happy Holidays!

I don't know your husband - so not sure of his personality. Given he is creative, I think I'd go with the art gift. It's really thoughtful and personal. That is what Christmas is about. This gift is great b/c it gives him some time to do what he loves... great idea.... AND if he really needs the screwdriver, it seems maybe he can get that as part of household stuff for everyday.

Could you have a relative give him the screw driver and you give him the book? That is what I would do.. I would have either my parents or his parents get him the tool..

Here's what I think. :)

Give him the gift he seems "set on" right now (the tool).

In mid-January, surprise him the other gifts (wire, coupons, etc.). Then, make him a nice dinner, and give him the wrapped gift (or however you want to present it) and tell him you know that he misses his art and you want to help him find time to create.

If you need a reason, then say it's a New Years present, to celebrate a new year of creativity. :)

I NEVER get it right when it comes to gifts for my husband! I would get him the screw driver he has his heart set on and wait for the book for his birthday when you may have more money to throw around. Plus, when you buy new stuff for your house, he will have no excuse not to hang it. ;)

Get him the screwdriver; it is what he wants and would make him so happy. If budget permits, get him the wire, the sculpture book because it will make you happy

Do the wire idea!!! It's original!!! and as long as you stay with the $30 limit, he should be surprised and delighted ;)

Get him both. Shop online at Half.com for a cheaper wire book or half price books. If money is really tight, get him the screwdriver for Christmas and set aside money to give him the art stuff for Valentines day or his birthday. But I would really try to surprise him with both at Christmas. You could even give him the coupons for uninterrupted art time and a sketch book now to help transition back into art 'mode'. Then get him the wire stuff after the holidays. You are sweet to consider this for your husband.
