Christening Outfit for Boys

We are finally getting our boys baptized in July. They wear size 18 months so it's a little harder to find christening outfits for them. I'm not opposed to an outfit, but the ones I find are $50 at least and I need two. Would it be okay to have them in white dress shirts and khaki shorts? Do they need to be in all white? If you are thinking white pants, does anyone have any suggestions on where to find them?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I didn't even think to ask the church, I thought white was just traditional, not mandatory. My daughter was baptized in my christening gown so it was never an issue; however she did wear light green underneath and no one said a word. I'll check with the church. I know $50 is reasonable for a christening outfit, but if I can try to find something they can wear again, I will be happy. $100 for outfits for one day bothers me for a little kid. If I only had one kid, he would of worn the same gown, but with twins we decided neither one of them would wear the gown.

My infant was in an all white christening gown made out of a 1930's petticoat from way back in the family. Very cool, and very beautiful!! However, my younger son was a toddler by the time we got him christened. He wore a little blue and white outfit, shirt and shorts. It was very cute and fit the bill very well.

Do what you think is best. His outfit wasn't actually hard to find at all, and probably easier because it was spring. Plus, he did wear it many times for nice after that...

At my church (United Methodist), babies and toddlers (and older) get baptized in all sorts of outfits....... some are in traditional white gowns, some are in every day clothes.....

It isn't the outfit that matters...... white is traditional, since it represents purity, but it isn't mandatory, by any means......

Ask your church about what is considered OK. Some feel strongly about the "all white" and others don't. My nephew was baptized in December wearing a white button down shirt and powder blue searsucker pants (year old). He was adorable and I thought it was very appropriate.

If they feel strongly about the all white, wait until the "summer clothes" come out in the department stores and look for white pants or shorts and a white collared shirt. Most department stores will carry them in their summer line- Sears, Penney's, Kohl's etc.

I know my godson was baptized in a white tux, but the poor guy looked SOOOO uncomfortable! (Literally, it was an infant tuxedo.) I, personally, would try to stick with white, but I think a slight deviation to khaki would be okay. I would probably go with pants as opposed to shorts, regardless, though.

Here's one I just found for $40: http://www.flowergirldressforless.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Sc...

Here's another for $37: http://www.zone4kids.com/Lito_Christening_Outfits-Tristan...

I just googled "boys baptism outfits" and looked in the "shop" section on the right. Good luck!

It can be any color/style you want. My son was wearing 12-18 months by the time he was 3 months old so most of the christening outfits were too small AND overpriced. We used an outfit that looked like a shirt, vest, and dressy pants (almost shorts but not quite). Pants were grayish, shirt was white and vest was blue. With my daughter, I found a pretty white dress with bright pink flowers on it. Neither was a traditional "christening" outfit but they were able to wear again and I didn't spend a fortune.

I would just double check with the preacher/priest performing the service so you comply with any hard rules they may have.

Go up to Burlington Coat Factory on Route 7 - Between 28 and Dranesville - Fairfax County parkway....they have a selection of great suits for little boys!!

Check with your church. They may be open to other colors. However, it's typically white.

CONGRATS!!!

This is still not super cheap, but this site is where I got DD's outfit and I loved the quality.

This one is short sleeved and goes to bigger sizes: http://www.onesmallchild.com/products/Tyler-Christening-O...

You can put them in anything you want as long as the church is OK with it. It's just traditional to have an outfit that's white. You can also check ebay or etsy.

Yes, check with your church. If you need all-white outfits, Amazon has them (some of them in larger infant sizes). No, they're not cheap. :^( Check out

Babies need to be in white. Wow $50 is very reasonable for a Christening outfit. Do not think you will do any better than that.

We will be baptizing my son in the summer. He does not have to wear all white thought I do plan to look for a white button down and maybe khaki shorts. He will be 18 months tomorrow. When we baptized my nephew, he was 6 and he wore a white shirt with some kind of design, blue khakis and gym shoes.
Some churches do dictate all white so ask to make sure. Most really baptize the child no matter what they wear.

I use to work for the Catholic Church (for 9 years at 3 different churches) and have never seen or heard of a church requiring a person to wear white.

Now, since you said Christening and did not say Baptism, I'm guessing you are not Catholic. Still, I've never heard of a church requiring this.

Both my boys were baptized in little suits. So cute, and they only cost about $15 each.

oh I had the same issue. Both my kids are super big for their age. My son was only 9 months old when he was baptized but he was in at least 12-18 mos too and I had the hardest time. I actually squeezed him into my nephew's outfit (who had worn it at 12 months) but found the cutest outfit to change him into at Gymboree. I found a little jumper and shirt that was almost all white but had really light blue pin stripes. It was so precious! Gymboree usually has coupons and stuff out. Do you have a Burlington Coat Factory near you? Those are usually good for kind of weird stuff like this. I'd also look on line and just Google white outfits for boys or something similar. I would bet that J Crew would probably have white pants or shorts but they will be more expensive. Personally I would try to find all white (or mostly white) before I would do khaki pants but that's me.

Hi, V.:

It sounds like you want them to wear white.
If you do, what about a white shirt and white leggings.
I notice there are white leggings on line for babies.

Just a thought.

Thanks for teaching your children about
God.

Good luck.

Check with your church, but around here, you put your child in whatever you like. Since they are toddlers and not babies, I think your idea is great. Maybe a cute accessory like a bow tie if you can find it. No way would I spend that much money. Most of the kids I see baptized who are not babies wear something like you described. I really don't like the shiny suit with the stupid chef hat for any age.

Sorry, I'm traditional and went with the gown for all 5 of our kids-and only one was a girl.
It was a homemade (by my mother) Baptism gown, and it was perfect for each of them. I'm so glad I did that, and we have special memories of each of them wearing it!
