? Chiropractic for Sensory Issues

Liv and anyone else who wonders, the spinal column houses the nervous system, which controls all bodily function. Therefore if the spine is out of alignment, the brains messages to the body get scrambled or lost. Simple as that! And it does work, for whole body wellness. Back pain and other things are just symptoms.

And, explain the rationale of using a chiropractor to help with sensory issues???

Explain the pathophysiology of how adjusting the spine is going to cure your child??? Sensory processing is not caused from a spine being out of alignment - I always wonder how chiropractors can claim that the same treatment - spinal adjustment - can cure every condition known???

I think chiropractors are dangerous - I went to one for neck pain and ended up with far more problems. When the chiropractor told me that he could "cure" my son's ADD and my daughter's dyslexia, I asked him to explain how - I wanted to know the physiology of how his treatment would change the brain structure of my dyslexic daughter? How does his treatment work to "cure" ADHD and dyslexia. - He got mad at me, because he did not have an answer. You can't change the structure of the brain - and just to add, why would I want to, my daughter has a gift, dyslexia.

When a doctor, psycologist etc.. prescribes a treatment they can explain how it works - why the body responds in a particular way and how the treatment affects the body.

So, ask the chiropractor to explain the particulars, how does it cure or help the sensory processing issues if he has a good answer, then decide whether or not you want to go forward with the treatment.

I have sensory processing.

When I was in my 20's, I got certified to teach parenting. I learned so much about Sensory.

To my knowledge, an Occupational Therapist w/ the extra training in Sensory is crucial.

In August, I went to a chiroprator for the first time. I had fallen a few times. After 3 falls, I got chronic ear infections. The doctor asked me about my medical history. I told this very experienced chiropractor I had sensory. She did not have a response.
I have not had more ear infections !!

Ask a very experienced OT or a neurologist that question.

The book "Out of Sync Child" might have some info. in it. It's a wonderful book about Sensory Integration Dysfunction. It helped me understand my sensory. Most libraries have a copy of it.

Not all chiropractors are equally qualified. There are chiros who say they can cure the common cold. Watch me roll my eyes back in my head when I hear that one!

You need to be careful of who you take your child to. There are some very good ones out there who have a lot of experience with children and will not hurt them (and will help). And then there are guys who are full of it and just try to milk your pocketbook. They are dangerous. Quite frankly, your child needs to be working with an OT skilled in working with sensory processing/integration problems.

I have a child with sensory processing disorder, and she receives therapy via Occupational and Physical Therapists. I've never heard or read about chiropractic as a recommended form a treatment for it. However, Carnio-Sacrial Therapy is a supplemental treatment available, and it does sound similar to what a chiropractic would do. However, that treatment does not seem to be mainstream, and it doesn't seem to be something that would be the primary therapeutic tool.

I have not used a chiropractor for sensory processing, but did use it for a teenager with bed wetting. It worked wonderfully. He stopped.
THey explained something was pushing on nerves, and they adjusted it to be better.

Good luck. Call around to all the doctors offices and you will feel better after you talk to them.

I know a mom who's son has found great relief (from illness and sensory) by adding chiropractic care to their therapies. He's not cured, but he has much better days on the days that he's adjusted. You want to make sure you find one that works with children. Good luck!

Maybe osteopathy! And don't listen to below they have probably just never been to a good alternative doctor!
