Chiropractic Care for 2 Year Old??

My 2 yr. old daughter was diagnosed with asthma about 6 months ago. The first medication the allergist put her on seemed to very strongly affect her behavior. Now she is on an inhaler twice a day but not doing so well symptom wise. I brought her to a chiropractor today to get another opinion. He thinks she can be treated using adjustments and we will see positive results. I would love more than anything to see her feel better and to not have to give her such strong medications. Has anyone had experience using a chiro for asthma in young children? I am nervous about doing something different but at the same time what we are doing currently isn't working! Also, any recommendations for a good chiro for kids?
Thanks for your ideas and thoughts!

Update: She is currently under the care of an allergist & I have no plans to just stop her meds, obviously I would never want to put her in danger. Also, she will be getting a flu shot on Monday. Yes, the previous medication was Singulair and I hated the side effects. Hope that clears up some of the concerns & questions.

What can I do next?

I have seen a significant improvement in overall health with myself and my kids since we started having regular adjustments. I'm 36 weeks pregnant and still go and I will be taking the baby in. While none of my kids have ashtma they used to constantly get sick (i run a daycare) and it was always respiratory. they are healthier now than ever before and the only change has been the chiropractic care.

We don't have asthma problems here...
However, we have taken my son for adjustments, since he was 2 weeks.
I don't live, in your area...so no recommendation here. The best way to find GOOD chrio, is word of mouth. Ask around and see, if anyone has one they are happy with.

There will be all kinds of "horror stories" from people who had bad experiences, at chiropractors. If you think about it, there are just as many for pediatricians, surgeons, OBGYNs. The key,is to find a good Dr. There are all kinds of sub-par doctors, in all fields. Please don't let people scare you into thinking Chiropractors harm people. I have been helped tremendously, from Chiropractic care. SO has my 18 month old.

Chiros are wonderful if you find a good one. There are quack chiros just like there are quack doctors--don't let someone with one bad experience ruin it for you.

Chiropractic won't hurt her, and it could help! I've had good luck with chiro for many of my problems. Give it a try!

Yes, definitely. It helped my 2nd daughter. In fact we used to throw the asthma medicine out when it was expired because we would not need to use it. My husband would bring her to MD and get meds. I'd then bring her to get adjusted and she would not need the meds. What would be out of alignment when she had asthma would be vertebrae that affected the nerves to her lungs. Relieving the nerve interference helped her lungs to function normally. So easy, she loved going and we had a healthy happy child.

The one and only time my back has EVER pulled out was the time I got 'adjustments' at a chiropractor. They told me it had to hurt before it could get better. It was never bad in the first place. I only went to see if they could do something for my shoulder. I do not in any way shape or form trust chirpractors. I have read too many horror stories about them. I would never in a million years have my child 'adjusted'. They are still growing and you would hate to damage anything perm. If you do want to do this please reasearch the heck out of it beforehand. Ask your ped and your allergist what they think also.

My sons worst asthma symptoms were when he was very young. He has very much outgrown his condition...he still has all the allergies but no asthmatic reaction. I am wondering if Singulair was the drug that your daughter couldn't take? My son did great on that but I took himoff it because I think it was affecting his personality. We did pulmacort every day when he was symptomatic and it really did help. I hated the steroids but as the docor told me-the little bit of steroids that he gets from this is way better than the huge dose he will get with a flareup. And he has had several flareups that we needed to do prednisone. One more thing-get her a flu shot. The flu can be deadly serious for an asthmatic child. Even just with URIs we would end up in the ER-I would hate to think what the flu would have done.

Are you going to an allergist or a respiratory doc? I'm not a believer in chiropractics for these types of things, but if you choose to do so, PLEASE keep her on her medication. It is so important and asthma can turn serious so quickly. If she does get better, you can work with her doc to wean her off at that time.

Hi M.B., I am sorry to hear about your daughter and her asthma issues. My son also experienced asthma during respiratory viruses and has even been hospitalized. I always was wary about the medications and reluctanly used them (as little as possible). I never explored the chiropractic route, but I did get into to see a homeopath, and that was the ticket! The doctor found the right remedy for my son and we use that now anytime he starts getting a cough. So far, we've had four 'episodes' and have not once had to use the inhaler (albuterol) or a nebulizer. If there is a good homeopath in your area, you might give it try. If you want to know more about homeopathy, read "Impossible Cure" by Amy Lansky. Good luck!

I have seen it help many kids! My own kids have been adjusted since birth, are sick less often and less severely than other kids we know. The reason it works is that your spinal cord houses your nervous system, which controls all bodily functions. So when a vertebrae is out of alignment, it can cause that nerve's function to decrease. An adjustment relieves that nerve pressure. It can take time depending on how long the vertebrae has been out of place, any falls, accidents, injuries, or traumas, muscle strength, and lifestyle/activity levels. We go regularly once a month or more as needed, and every day or other day when sick for about a week. More after falls or injuries. The doctor I see (and work for) and other doctor friends of mine accepts what insurance pays for children, which makes it clear that they are not just doing it to make money and gain patients!

My daughter saw an Osteopath when she was 4 months for 'colic' symptoms. we tried everything the Ped. reccomended and finally my mom suggested we take her to the Osteopath. The day after we saw him she stopped crying, we only had to see him two times. I completely thing it is a great idea.

I know colic is a different issue than asthma, but I do think it would help!

I have been going to a chiro for over a decade and I take my son there too. I've found that chiros believe they can cure many things. I am not so sure. I've found them to be great with sprains, strains and posture. Had absolutely NO help with ear issues. However some people have.

I would get a detailed explanation of why and how the chiro will help. I would also look for a naturopath doctor in your area. They are licensed doctors who have a broad knowledge of non-medicine treatments. Also, a good one should be willing to spend 10-15 minutes with you on the phone talking about what he/she can do and why.

Good luck! And don't take my advice as medical advice either ;o)
