Chip Delta Dental Insurance Anyone Has It?

I just found out the oral sedation or any anesthesia for dental work is not cover through CHIP. Does anyone have this and know how it works and how can I get this covered for my daughter. I really need her to get her cavities fix but it seems like I am on my own.

What can I do next?

I spent 20 years working in the pediatric dental field and insurance can be tricky no matter what your coverage. Most plans (private, large group, etc) do not cover sedation of any kind, including nitrous oxide - laughing gas, let alone oral sedation. One avenue you may want to pursue, is to check with your case worker to see if you might qualify for temporary medicaid coverage just to get the dental work completed. I have advised this for parents in the past and some were able to get medicaid on a temporary basis, others were not so successful. However, if you are able to qualify for medicaid, you may have to switch dental offices since not all providers accept it.
As one other person suggested, you may even be able to have the sedation covered under the medical portion of CHIP. Not a guarantee, but worth a shot (pardon the pun). If the administrative staff at your dentist is willling to go the extra mile, they can write a letter to explain medical necessity to your medical plan. Good luck to you! I know the cost can be very overwhelming if you cannot get it covered, but at least you will have peace of mind knowing you tried.

im not too sure. Contact your case worker. We had medicade when we had the conscious sedation done and it covered it all. Your case worker can give you more info. Good luck!

What do you mean by "oral sedation"? The injected numbing agent? Or something they feed through an IV?

Sorry to only ask a question instead of answering yours, but this information will help me form an answer (I hope).

Update: Okay, I looked up oral sedation. My next question is, does your daughter REALLY need this? What about the gas and local anethestic? These sedation dentists haven't been around that long - most of us went to the dentist and had cavities filled without sedation other than gas. No, the dentist is not a fun experience - the sounds and, if poorly done, the pain, is very off-putting. But the gas is a HUGE help. It simply allows you relax and I bet it's covered.

Can you switch dental insurance? I looked into some dental insurance for my sister kids they are on medicaid and I also saw that it does not cover anesthesia which I thought was weird since majority of kids will need some type of sedation/anesthesia for dental work. Maybe you can check to see if CHIPs will pick up the anesthesia part under the medical insurance?

Good luck!
