Chin laceration-How to Help Heal and Prevent Scarring

My three year old fell and busted the bottom of his chin open. The cut is about 1/2 inch long and he got stitches a week ago. At first, the cut seemed to be healing well, but now the cut has pretty much healed but turned into a bright red line. It's fortunately at the bottom of his face but you can still see it when looking straight at him. Any tips on stitches care and preventing a bad scar. Does anyone have any advice regarding kelocote, me derma, or other scar creams? Thanks!

Be diligent about sunscreen for the first year. Scar tissue tans differently, usually darker.

As he grows the scar will become less noticeable.

Vitamin E, essential oil (lavender), aloe vera. I think all of these would be terrific.

At his age, it will mostly fade. A little scar on the chin is manly, and one day, it will be covered with whiskers. For now, keep it moist, with petroleum jelly, vit. E oil, etc.

It will most likely fade over time. I've seen many scars that are bright and very noticeable for months, even a year. But they usually fade over time.

My son had a nice gash in his head last fall. It felt like forever before I started seeing it fade, but it's barely noticeable now.

Vitamin e oil and sunscreen daily.

I've got a couple of old scars that would look bad if I hadn't used vitamin e oil. I'm the only one who knows where they are now.

Make sure you follow Dr orders. This is still early in the healing process.

They probably told you how to care for the stitches so I would follow their advice, but we generally keep them dry for a couple of days, then use polysporin three times daily. We cover the wound and take the bandage off at night to let it breathe. Our kids' wounds have healed well that way and so have my stitches from surgeries. A red scar line is normal - but redness around the area could be a sign of infection and it would also probably look a bit swollen. So when you say bright red line, I'm thinking that's just the scar. We use vitamin E cream for scars and avoid the sun. Use the vitamin E cream after the stitches are out and wound is completely healed.

I'd ask the doctor what to use for scars when you go in to have the stitches removed. Scars do fade over time - my eldest had a scar over his top lip and it's barely noticeable now :)

Good luck :)

ScarZone or aloe, but I would expect it to fade over time.

Sounds weird but for 40+ years we have used original name brand Chapstick for all owies. Heals quickly. Just keep applying it. Good luck.
