My son started taking them around age 2. Some of the vitamins are made so that 1/2 of a tablet is a serving for 2-3 year olds, so you have to cut/break them in half.
When should children start taking chewable vitamins?

I whole heartedly believe in the Flinstone Vitamins, the doctor even told me to take them. The bottle says age 4.
Our Dr. told us to give vitamins since they were about 6 months. Market america has the best and most effective vitamins and supplements I have found. They have a line of kids vitamins called Isotonix Might-A-Mins. It is a childrens multivitamin and muli-mineral. They provide probiotics to promote digestion, and supports healthy teeth, bones, vision and heart. The vitamins are Isotonic which means it is a powder you mix with water and take on an empty stomach. In as little as 5 minutes you can eat. Isotonix solutions offer the fastest and most efficient absorbtion of all oral forms of nutritional supplements. There are no fillers or binders, You will get 95% absorbsion with Isotonix vs. at most 20% absorbtion taking a pill or chewable tablet. I love thier products.
You can check these out at www.marketamerica.com/pamrorman.
They may be on the spendy side but the benifits are so worth it. Plus since they are a liquid you could put it in a bottle.
Hope this helps

Our daughter's pediatrician recommended them at her 2 year checkup. She seems to really like the Gummi Vitamins. Goodluck!
If your daughter is 2yrs old, she can have 1/2 of a childrens chewable vitamin.. We buy the Target brand for our kids, as it is exactly the same as the name brand ones, just cheaper.
My 1yr old is on a liquid multi vitamin - per the doctor.
My dr. just said my 18 month old could start taking 1/2 a vitamin. Check the labels. He recommended the vitamins that are for ages 2+. I would just watch some of the ingredients, especially those gummy ones with all the sugar & corn syrup.
I think I started giving my daughter the gummy vitamins around 18mo. So, your child is plently old enough for them. Yes, gummies can lead to cavities (like other responders mentioned) however, as long as you brush their theeth really well you should be fine. Give with breakfast or with dinner, during the times you should be brushing her teeth after their meal.
Our doctor actually says if our son is eating pretty well, there's no need. He's almost 3 1/2. I did start a vitamin this fall to see if it would help prevent illness. I don't think it's made any difference that way. I picked a basic vitamin with no iron or excessive amounts of anything. I had a nephew whose teeth actually turned black from the iron in his!
My kids started at 18 months. They have 1/2 a chewable tablet until they're 4 years old. I also buy the Target brand since it's the same as name brand and cheaper.
My daughter started taking them around 2 or 2 1/2 yrs. old. My son takes them and she wanted to also. So I bought the gummy vitamins for her. She has no problem taking them. You can start kids earlier than that. I know they have the dropper kind for infants. My doctor had recommended the poly-soy (I think that is what it's called). Anyway, if you have any questions... I'm sure your dr. could recommend a good one that's geared to her needs.
My daughter started at a year and a half. Flintstones has special ones for kids that age.
This seems to be a huge debate!
When I asked my doctor, they asked about what foods our then 2 yr old was eating (now 4) and went from there. However, I've been "informed" from others that regular doctors don't have a whole bunch of training in that area (that is to be argued, I'm sure) as to compared with say a chiropractic doctor, etc....
Bottom line is, your little girl isn't too young to start a vitamin, but it's totally up to you :) Don't feel bad for what I or others say...go with your gut.
I did start a chewable early on and plan to with this pragnancy as well. I found with myself with a good quality vitamin that colds and other sicknesses were either kept at bay or lasted much less time than without the vitamins. I am holding that thought in my head in hopes for my daughter along with plenty of rest (we do not let her run and run and run on empty and she still naps at age 4) and liquids.
Again, go with your gut...you are your child's best advocate :)
Being that she's 2, you could start anytime. My kids think the Flintstone Vitamins are too "sour" so we give them the Gummi ones (which they love).
Hi J.
Think about children take vitamins right after they stop nursing and they are not getting vitamin from you.
If they aren't nursing, then we suggest giving them right away- I know of a good tasting children's liquid vite.
And- all natural multivite for older kids for chewables.- no art. colors etc.
Our food sources today lack nutrition- example- it takes 11 bananas picked green to equal a ripened on the vine banana we used to only get 50+ yrs ago. Soils are depleted and most foods are chemically altered.
Hope that sheds some light.

Hi J.,
The company I work with vitamins for children are for ages 2 and up. They are best out there by the way through independent testing, no to expensive either. Really work too.

Hi J.,
I carry a great children's vitamin in my store called Mighty Mins. I think they are one of the best vitamins on the market for kids. You can start them as young as 6 months. Just follow the dosage listed (I think it is 1 at this age) and they can be crushed into applesauce or something if you are not comfortable with them having one to chew up. They taste really good. My kids remind me that they need their vitamins and love them. There is also a really great study on them regarding the bionutritional aspect of behavioral issues related to the vitamins.
If you are interested in more information, you can look them up on-line or email me at ____@____.com
K. (mom to 5 year old and almost 4 year old)
I think chewables are for 3 years and older. I think 2 year olds still take liquids or half a chewable. Check the labels on the box. Stay away from gummy vitamins, they can cause cavities just like jummy candy. I read about a study in a nutrition magazine and children who never had cavities before got cavities within 6 months of starting gummy vitamins.
We just started our 21/2 year old on the gummie vita bears.
Flintstones Vitamins make a chewable just for 2 and 3 year olds. My son has taken them with no problems since he turned 2. I'd stay away from the gummy ones too, just because they are so close to candy.
My 1 year old daughter takes liquid vitamins.
We started giving our son the gummie vitamins at 2 years old.
We started our kids young. My son was only like 14 months when we started. (Although he weighs really close to what our 3 year old daughter weights.....LOL.) So, we gave him a whole vitamin just because our daughter could and they are close in size. Both our kids also take fish oils and have been since about 1 year old.
We prefer natural and organic products so we started with Metagenics brand Multigenics Chewables. Our daughter doesn't really care for them anymore (she used to like them.....) so we just discovered Nordic Naurals brand Nordic Berries. THEY ARE GREAT! It is a multivitan "treat". Both our kids absolutely LOVE THEM. They come running when we ask who wants vitamin berries!!!
The fish oil product we give them is Nordic Naturals brand DHA Junior. It contains 100% arctic cod liver oil and omega 3. It is a very reputable brand and their products are true to what they say they are. Our kids LOVE these too!
Definitely look at your daughters' size to determine her dosage. But go ahead and start her on a vitamin if you feel she's ready.
