Child with ITP

Does anyone have a child that has ITP (blood disorder)? My son was diagnosed with it last Saturday, Aug 9th. We have had to make several trips to the Dr and Hospital for bleeding that would not stop. I am very confused on this disorder and not sure where to go for information. The doctor has given us lots of info, and my son has had several IV's of meds to help his system in this but he still has a very low if none platelet count after two treatments.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone that has responded and I am sorry I have not called anyone just yet, we have had a few things happen this past weekend so I thought I would give a little update for everyone, my son platelet count as of Friday was still below 10,000. Which the platelets don't even register until they reach that count, and from what the Dr are telling me he seems to be pretty close to ZERO since the way his bruises are looking and the amount of purple spots he has and still continues to get. We opted for a second round of WinRho on Friday and he ended up have an allergic reaction to it. He was pretty sick all weekend. Friday vomited and had chills all night. Saturday had a nose bleed off and on from 7:30 am to about 3:00 that afternoon and it was only about 10 to 15 minutes in between each nose bleed that lasted about 10 min each. Then Sunday he woke up and was covered in Hives, so needless to say it has been rough. So today we are going back for another platelet count and if they have not made a drastic improvement today then we are going to do something called IVIG. The doctors at Scottish Rite have been WONDERFUL! I could not have asked for better doctors, they answer all my questions without making me feel like I am calling to much or anything. They have given me so much info on this but I think it is just so much that can happen, that may happen or that may never happen but you have to be aware of that it is just information overload. I do understand about the stares and glares from people out in public, we have faced that multiple times in the last week or so. People think you are abusing your child and they judge you before they even know the situation. Thank you all for you comments, and I will keep you updated on his progress. And the few that did give me your number for support THANK YOU I will probably be giving you a call :)

Hi A.,

Im sorry that you are dealing with this right now. My now 6 year old son Alex, was diagnised with ITP when he was almost 2 years old. It started with unusual bruising, more than normal. I thought in the begining that was part of toddlerhood, but one day i took him to the Dr and he had a huge and unexplicable bruise on his foot. The nurse asked me a LOT of questions about it and seemed like she was not beleiving me when I told her I didn't know how he got it.I felt really bad, because I could see suspicion on her tone of voice. Then I realized this was not normal. I took him to his ped and they run a blood test for platelets count. When I saw 2 of the Dr coming back to explain the results, i knew something was wrong. His platelets count was 21000.
We went to a hematologyst at Children and he explained everything. basically he said,ITP many times gets better on its own, over time, it seemed like at that point his platelets were at its lowest. His count was borderline for treatment and he gave us that option or we could wait, have his P count twice every week and see if they started to raise on its own.We opted for that, keeping in mind the treatment in case i got lower the next time. He even warned agains some staringwe could endure and some judgmental looks(because of the bruises), which we felt...

Fortunatelly it was he same for the next two readings and the little by little started to go up, 31000;35000... In the mean time, I gave him Vitamine C with Echinacea (since this seems to be a disrder of the Inmune System), and food hight in Iron, and vitamine C like beets with carrot juice, spinach, beans, kiwe fruit etc.Anything that would boost the Inmune System. The Dr didn't beleive it could make a significant difference, but it couldnt hurt either, he said. That made me feel like I was doing something for my son, that was the only thing I could contribute with, the only thing I could control. It made the waiting period more bearable.
We had to watch his every move to avoid falls, which if he ever had follen from a foot hight could cause internal bleeding, we were warned. It was very challenging, with him being a toddler, and a very active one. It was hard but we did it.

Over a period of 6 months more or less, his platelets count went up to ###-###-####, which was normal. We breathed a sight of releive. He said to keep on watching him closely, for those bruises and for those little dots in his skin, which I thought in the begining, were flees bits or something ( we had a cat who took the blame), bleeding gums, etc. Thank God the P never went down again. We still check him every year.

The dr said that this could be a one in a life time thing or it could happen again. My mom did suffer from a blood disorder, so that may have been a factor, we dont know.

A., I share my story so you know you are not alone. If you have a good Dr, and is giving you lots of info, then trust him, and try no to overload yourself with information, specially online. Trust God. And if you'd like to talk to someone that has been there in some way ( I know every case is different), please don't hesitate to contact me.

I'll be thinking of you and praying for your son's healing.

A.

A.,

My husband had that and we had to deal with it for a couple of years. There is so much that went on and I understand how you are feeling right now. If you would like to talk about this with me, I would be very happy to help you. My number is ###-###-####. My husband is fine now, but it was after almost loosing him. He eventually had his spleen removed. His spleen was distroying his platelets. I am 37 years old with a 6 year old son and an 11 year old step son. Michael, my husband, saw Dr. Sarma. He was located in Lawrenceville, but now is in Snellville. I look forward to hearing from you and I will be praying for your son and your family as you all go through this. S.---Bethlehem, GA

I'm sure there is tons of information on the internet but you never know how good sources are. I suggest that you call the doctor, let them know that you are confused and set up an appointment to discuss this condition. it is the doctor's job to make sure you understand what is going on, if he is too busy to make time for you or you feel rushed, talk to the nurse or find another doctor. You need to be comfortable with this information so that you can help your son. good luck!
