My next-door neighbor pays $200 per week/$800 per month for before-school and after-school care for her son who is starting second grade in 2 weeks. She's been doing this for the past 2 years :-/
What do you think is a fair price for child care for 2 children, who are both in school (k and 3rd grade). I drop them off in the morning about 6:45, they get on the bus at 8:30, 4 days a week and they are picked up by the sitter one day a week and stay there for about an hour until I get home, I pick the kids up on the other 3 days? The sitter quoted me a price and it seems a little high to me but I don't know what the average rate is. Just wondering Thanks
Thank you everyone for your input, from your responses the price she gave me seems to be about average. We just recently changed from a daycare center to an in home child care provider and weren't sure what to expect. Thanks again all:)

My guess would be $30/day give or take a few bucks.
The issue is not how much your child is in her home. The issue is that it's impossible to find another parent that works between those times. In order to take a child like this and you are talking about 2 of them, she would need to find someone that comes at 8:45 and leaves before they get off the bus on the days she would have them in the afternoon or just go over on kids when yours are there. To give up the income she could make from 2 full-time kids for the tiny little bit of money you want to pay is just not worth it for most providers. I can not afford before and after school care. It's just not even practical in any way.
Where I live a sitter is $10 an hour for school-age kids. At almost 9 hours a week, I would expect to be charged around $90. If she has other kids in her care (aside from her own) then I would expect to pay less, around $7 per hour so around $60.
I get $10 an hour for this arrangement. I start at 6:30am stay till 9am when they go to school. I come back after school at 330 and stay till 5:30 or 630 depending on whether it is moms day or dads day.
She picks them up one day a week, and watches them for about 2 1/2 hours a day, four days a week. Does she also provide breakfast? So, about 10 1/2 hours a week, including travel time for the one day she picks up. Is my math really, really off?? I'm having a hard time concentrating, it's really noisy here and the cat is acting crazy on my lap!
I don't know, $35 a day for 4 days and then maybe $15 extra for the one day she picks them up? So... $165 ? That's only about $18 a day per child, which is what a low income place around here charges a day. So, decide with her is this going by hourly or daily rate. And you also have two children.
That sounds about like something that would work around here, but it depends on her circumstances (like, how many children she is watching, if waking up at 6:45 is rough for her, I know it would be for me!) and also what the rate in your area is. Why don't you call around to actual daycares and find out their rates, their prices are usually way more expensive. How much is she asking?
In my area, day care centers charge $5.00 per hour per child. Not sure about babysitters.
I was thinking around $30-50 but reading some of the other mother's responses, I'm under by a lot in some cases... I'm so curious what they actually quoted you now...
i pay $75.00 a week for my second grader i drop her off at 6:40 and pick her up at 4pm
I was quoted $85 per week to pick up my 4 yr old pre-k girl at 1130 and keep her until 6 pm 5 days per week, by a traditional licensed daycare.
