Chicken Pox Relief

My daughter just showed up with spots all over her and I am pretty sure it is the chicken pox. I know calamine lotion is recommended, but I know there are a lot of other natural ideas out there that have been used and effective. I will get calamine lotion, but I know this will only go so far. So if you have any ideas, I am open to trying most anything. Thanks for your help.

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for the responses. My daughter did not end up having chicken pox, but I am so excited about all the responses and ideas that I will be well prepared for when she does get them. Thanks again for all your help!!

I filled up the kiddy pool with cool water and aveeno and let my son splash around in it all day when he had the chicken pox. His pediatrician actually told me not to put calamine lotion on open sores, but I did anyway if he seemed really itchy. We basically just did LOTS of Aveeno baths. Hope this helps.

Baking soda bath right away. Then a couple times a day. Lots of fluids. Gloves or socks on her hands to keep her from scratching the spots. I didn't use calamine lotion on my girls. All I did was the baking soda baths about three times a day. It works.

I am absolutely amazed at how many of your posters jump the assumption bandwagon and tell you how to treat it.

GO! TO! THE! DOCTOR!!

My sister had chicken pox in her throat and vagina. Had my parents self-diagnosed her, she could have died. Don't treat anything except the itching, assuimg there is some, until you have her checked.

I entirely forgot to share this with you.
Hopefully you've already found some relief that
is successful for your child.

I didnt get chickenpox until I was 17 years old.
I was on a cruise in the middle of the ocean when they surfaced.

I swam in the salt water pool as often as possible
which dried up the pustules FAST. The ones in the back of my throat were the worst, and gargling with salt water helped too. I was only really ill one day, when I just laid low. If you have access to a beach, or a pool, with salt water, you might consider the possibility for your child. It was all I had, to help me, and I did well.
Only one scar.

R.,

I would give her L-Lysine 250-500 mg twice a day. This is an amino acid. Being that Chicken pox & shingles, are herpes viruses, L-lysine is effective against herpes viruses.

Aveeno baths- soaks, lotion & soap may be helpful as well.

First, I encourage you to make sure it's chickenpox as it can be serious for some children so it's important to get a diagnosis by seeing a dr. Regarding the itching, oatmeal baths are a big help. A lot of kids like to soak in the bath and the oatmeal seems to stop the itching. It's also relaxing and it's something to "do" when they can't go out and be with friends and do their normal routine (boredom often sets in with illness where children can't do as they normally would). Be sure to protect them from themselves at night with socks or mittens on hands so they aren't itching and opening up sores as this can lead to scabbing and scarring. I've never had much luck with calamine lotion but baking soda and oatmeal seem to work pretty well. With baking soda, you just mix it with water to a paste, and then put it on the itchy parts. Cheap and it works for mosquito and other itchy bites too... Good luck!

May sound too simple but Aloe Vera Gel(the real stuff from the plant or the closest version you can get, where the first ingrediant is aloe)Aloe has a natural wound hormone in it that will relieve some of the itch/pain and heal the spots a bit quicker too! If you refrigerate it, it can really help with the discomfort too! Good Luck!-L.

Aveeno oatmeal bath. It was a lifesaver when I had them at 13. very uncomfortable and I know the only releif I got was to do a tepid bath with aveeno several times a day and a silky nightgown helps too. Anything that will rub your skin is a nightmare! Hope she gets over them quickly

When I was a kid my mom had me soak in a tub with Tide laundry soap in it, the powdered kind. It dried up the pox and made me more comfortable.

I second those oatmeal baths. Aveeno also carries a full line of skin care products like lotions and anti-itch creams that are oatmeal based and fragrance free. I would try those if you are not comfortable with the calamine lotion.

The best thing I've found is oatmeal. An oatmeal bath always made the kids (and my husband) feel better. I have also found an oatmeal cream (I believe it was st. ives) that worked great too. Good luck

Hi you can give her an oatmeal bath. They sell packs at Walgreen or Walmart. It is called Aveena. If they don't
have that brand ask the pharmacist.Hope this helps you out!
