This has happened to us a few times. Even when I froze them. When I thawed it to use it was bad. Take it back to the store. They should be more then happy to help. (if not shop somewhere else)
The last several times I have purchased (boneless, skinless) chicken breasts, I have opened them up within several days of the "sale by" date and it has been bad... rotten egg smelling bad.
Which sucks, because we are poor, chicken is expensive, not much food around here...
I am beginning to think it must be a refridgerator thing, but none of my other food is going bad, what do you all think, as this hasn't happened to me in the past and I haven't done anything different?
I know it's best to freeze the chicken, but when you use it within the usage OR freeze by date, shouldn't it be good enough to use without freezing if I am using it within days of the sale by date?

I had the same problem
take it back if you still have the receipt. I had to take some back Especially if its bad before the sell by date.
I agree with the others. Take it back. Even if you don't have the receipt, the store info will be on the price tag. (barcode)
I started having this problem a lot (and I know it's not my fridge - I think it's the store where I was buying them). I started buying individually wrapped frozen breasts and keeping them in the freezer until I was ready to defrost and cook them.
I had that happen last week. The date was 4 days LATER. It was Sam's club, and they took it back. Do take it back.
