First of all, sorry this is so long, but please take the time to read it. I am looking for other mothers who have had a similar experience.( and maybe can warn others in the process) My son went through quite an ordeal in his first few months. He was getting a really bad rash on his arms and the entire back of his little head. The best way to describe it would be a chemical burn, or something similar.Very red, and blister looking, and oozing liquid. Anyway, LONG story made somewhat short. He ended up seeing a total of 7 doctors, was prescribed 15 different medications, and was hopsitalized for 4 days, and had an ER visit (seperate incident) for an allergic reaction to one of those 15 RX meds. All the docs kept telling me it was eczema, but I had my doubts. I always felt int he back of my mind it was somehow related to his infant carrier, as it seemed to ALWAYS get so much worse after putting him in it. It even cleared up completely on one occasion ( we had stayed at home for about 4 days in a row - no carrier ) . then I decided to venture out, put him in the carrier, and that night he was all inflamed, red, and oozy again. 3 days later he was admitted into Miami Childrens for a severe infection (which he got through the open sores). After that , I never put him in the carrier (that was in Oct) and he hasnt had a mark on him ever since, which confirms my suspicion that it WAS NOT eczema. anyway, I need to hear from other mothers that have had a similar exp. I had a CHICCO CORTINA infant carrier and strollewr.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the helpful replys. I googled this and its actually very common. anybody interested can google something like " rash and infant carriers or blisters caused by infant carriers" . I read so many stories like mine, and saw pictures also. Very scary. most of those people believe it was caused by the chemicals applied to make the flame resistant. anyway, Im just glad my lil boy is better. Thats all that really matters. Thanks again

I am soooo happy the 2 of you have fixed the problem. Huzzah! We had a similar thing with diaper wipes, including trips to the ER and it basically being a fluke that we figured out what the cause was, aka, he's allergic to them.

To me it DOES sounds less like a chemical burn and more a contact dermatitis (aka an allergic reaction to something that is touched). Which is an important distinction... because it means he's allergic to SOMETHING in the carrier... the fabric/ polyester/ fire retardant/ etc.... and the next time he comes into contact with the same substance he'll have a similar reaction.

Here's a link with some great info from a very trustworthy site.

I'm so glad he's better but this does not sound odd at all to me. We, as a family, decided we would not purchase anything (NOTHING!!!, that goes for consumables as well) manufactured in China after my sister almost went into shock from the rubber on an expensive pair of shoes. She couldn't determine what was causing the rash but finally she had trouble breathing. The Chinese government has NO standards for things imported to the US and they will slip anything through that they can. If you buy from a US company that has shipped their manufacturing over there then you have a company that doesn't care either. They monitor themselves, not for our good, but for their pocketbooks.

I'm sooooo sorry you had to learn this the hard way. Eczema is a systemic reaction which means that something that is in his body has caused a reaction. You could possible label this as eczema because the chemicals do pollute the system. They are absorbed through the largest organ of the human body, the skin, and then they flow through the bloodstream polluting other areas.

Personally I would bring this up with the manufacturer's legal department. You probably won't get any satisfaction because our laws protect these giants but sometimes it just feels good to defend your family....

Once again, I'm so tickled he's okay!

I, too, agree that you should contact the manufacture and report the incident. It may be the first case, or they may have others they're tacking. I'm glad to hear your son is better.

In my industry, pharmaceuticals, we are required by law to report anytime we learn of a side effect of our medication to the FDA. As a representative, I had 24 hours to report something (which often had nothing to do with my product).

My guess is that your son was having an allertic reaction to the liner in the car seat. Did you wash it before putting him in it?

I'd also recommend learning what material it was made of by looking at the tag on the back to see if it is the material used that causes the reactio nand not that specific model.

Because we are all biologically different, one person may react adversely and it not affect anyone else. I couldn't tolerate my chemo in my right arm (and had awful side effects each of the 4 times I received it there), but I had no problems in my left arm (the remaining 8 times).

Hoping this is the end of the issues for your son!
Good luck.

He probably has sensitive skin...
I have had some extreme reactions to detergents and some lotions, bright red flaming hot skin. A sister got bad hives from chemicals used by the carwash (detailed the inside of car).
Good for you for figuring it out!
Just keep an eye out for future problems and keep him away from anything you suspect is causing a problem.
I would call the company that makes the carrier and tell them what happened. They should know, since they make products for babies who are so vulnerable.

I would definantley call them and discuss with them what the chemicals are so you can know to keep him away from them in the future. You will eventyually have to put him in other car seats and even maybe in clothes that have treatments on them too.

I would contact the manufacturer. It still could be eczema. Eczema occurs when an individual is allergic to something. There could be something in the dye or material that your baby is allergic to so, if further down the road, he has problems, don't rule out eczema. I have a 3 yr old with horrible eczema and we've had to change our whole way of life to keep his flare ups down....not easy.
Good luck and how scary!

Wow, so sorry your son had to go through that! I would find out if their carrier is treated with some sort of flame retardant. I think, sadly, most of them are. I'm not a fan, and always buy jammies that are NOT flame retardant for that reason. Have you noticed any reaction to his jammies too? Have you contacted the manufacturer?

Good luck- I hope you get compensated in some way!

I'm so glad you discovered the cause of your poor little guy's miseries. It will be interesting to see whether other children were similarly affected. There was a problem with the plastic or dye in a certain type of flip-flop a few years ago that caused severe rashes in sensitive users, and that could certainly happen with other products, as well.

Bear in mind, though, that occasionally a single person can have a reaction to just about anything that is completely nontoxic to anybody else.
