CHASE : "Card Locked" Calls....

We just received an automated call from Chase Bank. The phone number showed up as "unknown" on my husband's cell-- he accidentally left it home today. Supposedly our debit card was "locked". It offered to unblock it if we typed in the 16 digit card number. I hung up when that request came up.

I am posting this because it sounded real, and it would be remarkably easy for a busy person not to think too hard about it. Especially moms with busy little kids. Doing a little online checking, this has happened in the past.

So, just a head's up... remember, if your card is really affected, a person from the bank will call you and they will confirm your info; they won't need your 16 digit card number because they will already have that.

As for the required question: see any snow today? We've only had a few disparate teeny flakes....

So What Happened?

I'm laughing at some of these... esp Birds.... the fact that you didn't have a Chase account is just funny!

Peg, you have gotten far more than we have. Cold wind but not a snowflake in sight now.

If I ever get a call I call back to the number on the back of the card. That way if it's legit I get it sorted out. If it's not legit than I can alert them to the scam so they can warn other people about it.
We've had our cards get a lock put on it when they saw something suspicious. Sometimes it was just us doing something "out of the ordinary" like being at a convention where all the charges come up as all over the place. But it's also been legit breaches before as well.
All of these scams are getting to be too much!

Yeah there seems to be more scams coming at us through the phone lately.
We get calls from 'Mircosoft' telling us that our computer is giving them error messages at their server and they will help us fix it.
You ask them for some specifics and often they say something about a windows version that you don't even have.
Uh huh - yeah right.
Microsoft does NOT call YOU to help you with your computer - NOT EVER.
I just tell them "Look Buddy - I know you're a scam - you know you're a scam - don't call my number again or I'll sic the FCC on you.".
I've had some phishing emails too.
I just delete them without clicking on anything.

All our snow has melted and we don't have anymore in our forecast for right now.
I'm ready for Spring already!

I get calls from 'cardholder' or 'credit customer services' telling me they can reduce my rate or some other nonsense. It is a real person or a machine telling me to call. A real bank will say they are from that bank first. So much fraud it is unbelievable.

One way to protrct yourself: most banks now will only ask for the last 4 digits of a credit or debit number. THe Fed required banks to change their card statements so the full number is not shown on it. THat is how banks also catch crooks phishing for info by calling the bank.

No snow yet but supposed to start around 5 and get 2-6 inches.

Thanks for the update. I have not received any calls like that... yet.

We deal with Chase for all of our business and I am used to getting the fraud alert recording to call them and confirm activity. I call the # on the card and sort through it. I appreciate that they are so observant, especially when and if all 3 of us are in different states and they pick up on the charges.

I have my daughter's BOA debit card on alert now because this am she had 2 charges 1 @ $1 and 1 @ .16 which raised a red flag.

I check the bank and credit card accounts daily which I feel is necessary with our business as well as to try to stay one step ahead of the scammers.

You are SO correct that it is easy to fall for the scam thinking your card is on "frozen".

About 2 months ago, hubby got a hang up call on his cell. Since he is Mr business man, he though he missed something and he called back and there was nothing. Later, we got the cell bill and there was a $250 charge because he called the number back. ATT reversed the charge. So if anyone gets a hangup call, DON'T call back. If someone needs you, they will call you!!

No snow here, it is in the mid 40's misting rain and tomorrow's high is expected to be 32. UGH.. I am so ready for Spring and the hot weather again.

Thanks for the warning. Things like that always make me cautious and leery... I guess I'm just the suspicious type. But I'm sure they only do that stuff because it works some of the time. So thanks for sharing. :)

Oh. As for the snow... no. We were told we would see some last week, but alas we did not. We never see snow here. :( The kids would have loved it.

Thank you for thinking to post this!

Today, I received a call from "account services", and immediately hung up. Just received my new Chase card yesterday, and I've been with Chase for years. I knew right away something wasn't right...

Snow fall? Here in the Kansas City area, we are up to about 8 inches, expecting more. It's beautiful, but I'm tucked in to my warm, cozy home so I don't mind it. I feel bad for people who have to work in this.

(Please keep the safety of our snow plough drivers, emergency responders and city employees in your prayers! Thanks!)

Today, I got a very official-looking email from BofA. Online account locked down because of too many unsuccessful login attempts, blahblahblah.

The grammar/spelling/punctuation errors were more subtle than I've seen in the past, and it had all kinds of reassuring logos from Norton AV and the assurance that online transactions are backed by their Online Banking Security Guarantee.

Of course, we don't bank with BofA.

And one line in particular did jump out at me:

"We detected irregular activity on your Bank of America online on 05/02/2014."

Dem scammers is psychic!!! ;-)

I suspect this one is coming from outside the US, lol.

No comment on the snow situation, lol.

Yep lots of scams via phones now. Cell phones.
I never answer calls that say "unknown" etc.

Anyway, LOTS of rain here... seemingly all week apparently. Flash flood warnings yesterday and last night. And temps in the 60's. Which is cold for us! LOL

not that its related but since you said "chase" I thought I'd share...

I review job applications at work. Since you have to be legally permitted to work in the US there is a question regarding visas. It says "visa type-_________" the applicant put "Chase" hahaha.

Good job ignoring that call. and thanks for the heads up. No snow here in so cal but at least we are finally experiencing some winter. 60* here today!

haven't had the chase bank one (yet) but 'cardmember services' calls just about every day and hangs up when i make it to a human and ask to be removed from their list. i've also had the heavily accented 'we are microsoft technical support and your computer is sending us error messages' (we have a mac).
since congress can't seem to do anything important these days, maybe they could address a little thing like this? nah, they have 'people' to answer their phones for them.......

Woof!!! The lows that scammers will go!!!

In Maryland, there's been a rash of phone scammers calling people telling them they are from PG&E (the gas company) and their bill is overdue and their power, water or gas (depending upon the company) is about to be shut off. They need to pay via a credit card RIGHT NOW in order to keep their accounts in good standing...and people fall for it.

I bank with USAA and my husband banks with BofA...we've had problems with BofA but NOT USAA...

Great that you were paying attention!!!

Nope. No snow here. We were supposed to get 5" Sunday night into Monday morning...it never showed up...only rain....now we are under a winter weather advisory - Freezing rain....

We get these calls, too, and don't have a Chase account. We also get calls on what was once our business line trying to sell supplies for office equipment we've never had. We're on the national No Call list, but I hear that many of these calls originate outside the country, so are not subject to that law.

SNOW! I just woke from a small nap, and the 20 flakes an hour has multiplied to a real snowfall. We've accumulated almost 1/4 inch so far (3:30 p.m.).

Yep, we got an e-mail from "Chase" today wanting our name and password. My husband clicked on it and actually entered our name and password. UGH!! He immediately realized his mistake and called Chase (the real Chase Bank) and they re-set our online access. Still, though. It could have been bad.
