My 11 month old daughter has chapped, cracked lips. They bleed every night and I can't seem to make it stop. The crack goes right down the middle of her bottom lip. I tried putting some chapstick on it but she just licks it off. Please help I don't know what to do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I tried the carmex and it seemed to work. She likes to keep her tounge out all the time so she just keeps getting them wetter. Thank you for all the great advise!

there is a thing made by the same people who make that butt paste, but it is for chapped cheeks and lips. I saw it in my local Hy-Vee tonight and thought about it for my daughters cheeks. I didn't buy any, but it might be worth a try. Good luck

I have used Lansinoh (pure lanolin) before. You know the stuff you put on your nipples when you are breastfeeding. It is great for chapped lips because it doesn't taste yummy to lick (like chapstick) yet is safe to ingest if they do lick it. Works like a charm.

I would also try putting it on after she is asleep. Maybe she won't like as much of it off.

Dehydration often shows up through chapped lips. I would use lanolin as well, but I would also try to get her to drink more water. If she's getting the right amount of water, her lips won't chap so badly. ;)

HTH!

Try using a lanolin based ointment like A&D ointment. Or if you can find it, Bag Balm. I got my tin in the pet Department at Wal-Mart. Most drug stores should also have it. It's been great for chapping and diaper rash. It clears it right up! You want something that has healing factors but also provides a barrier. My daughter was chapping all over her face from her pacifier use. and the Bag Balm cleared it up in just a couple of days!

Lanolin is fine, but can be a bit expensive. Keep the water going so you know it's not dehydration causing the problem, and then coat her lips with plain old petroleum jelly. It seals the moisture in, and although it's technically not edible, a little (even if she licks it off multiple times a day) won't hurt your daughter at all. I'm actually allergic to most lip- and chapsticks, so I've been using petroleum jelly myself for years! You can even buy the little tubes to carry in your purse for her. Apply often, keep her drinking, and you should see a real improvement. Good luck!

I'll chime in with Lanolin as well. We use PureLan. I use it on my daughter's cheeks when they get chapped, and her chapped thumb too (she's a thumb-sucker). It works wonders, and it's completely safe if she happens to get it in her mouth.

I would definately try the lanolin. That really does work great and has some staying power. It takes very little so you could probably get a small sample from your pediatrician or the hospital if you don't already have some.

Wait until she is asleep and put Clinique Repairwear lip gloss on her. It works great!
