Change in Stools.

Ever since my son was born, I've had this weird obsession with poop. I know this is a trait of being a new mom, but I thought it was done and overwith until about a month ago. My son's stools have started to resemble that of a goat. They're pebbly-like. He does poop normal about 3 times a week, but the rest of his poops are just little semi-hard pebbles. Is this normal? He's been on organic cow's milk since he was 12 months (now he's 15). He poops everyday too. Could it be a mild case of constipation? Any ideas on how to make his stools softer? Thanks Moms :]

So What Happened?

Thanks so much everyone for the answers! :) After researching almond/rice milk, I've decided to give that a whirl. I'm also upping his veggie intake with more fiber and grains. Everyone was so helpful, again THANKS SO SO MUCH!!! <3

When my girls get constipated like that, I increase the peaches, pears, apricots and grapes they get and decrease the bananas and applesauce. Also, more water (or diluted apple juice or white grape juice) can be helpful.

It is very important to keep our systems running smoothtly, usually our stools are consequence of what we put in our mouths or lack of it, In most cases, based in my own experience is that I do not eat enough amount of fiber which you find in fruts, vegetables, and liquids. Now I had been eating the Activia yogurt and solve my problem and taste really good. Make sure your children drink fruit juices avoit sodas and consume pleany of organic vegetables.
Good luck, it is important start our children in good food habits.

The calcium salts in milk can do this to his stool. make sure he's not drinking too much milk, and that he is getting a good balance of whole grains, fibre, water, veggies and fruit. if you're worried about him getting the nutrients he needs - give him yogurt, kefir, almond milk, and dark green leafy vegetables.

You might also consider the fact that cow milk is a lot harder to digest than other types of milk out there. This is not well-known...certainly not advertised. Goat milk is much easier to digest, and more wholesome than cow milk. If he is suffering some constipation, it may be due to the cow milk. After they were weaned, my kids drank fresh goat milk which I obtained from a local farm, and later, they drank rice milk...not a big fan of the taste of soy milk. The myth that cow milk gets you all the calcium you need is not factual. As far as getting calcium, you can get more calcium out of a cupful of spinach than milk. There are other better food sources of calcium out there, more easily obtained nutrients, and easier on little tummies.

If he's pooping every day, and doesn't seem to be in any pain, I wouldn't worry about it. Sounds normal to me.

My daughter gets this way when she hasn't been drinking enough water. She LOVES milk but I make sure and limit it to meals and offer sippy cups of water the rest of the day. Within a few days, then her stools are back to normal. And it is actually a good thing to poop every day, as that's what our bodies should be doing.

Good luck!

Cow's milk and dairy can be very, very constipating. And those poops can be painful and cause anal fissures. You might consider upping his water in place of milk or trying a mixture of unsweetened almond milk and cow's milk until you eventually do all almond milk. My little one drinks almond milk and water and does'nt have issues. Great that you are doing organic though for cow's milk, you just may need to cut it down to one glass per day and the rest water. Just an afterthought, one of my kids was a milk drinker and she was getting ear infections. I took her off and they disappeared. Now no one drinks cows milk in my family. There are calcium fortified almond and rice milks (stay away from soy as its a big allergen and too much can cause breast tissue in boys and girls for that matter). You can also spike his milk with powdered acidopholis (for kids, whole food fridge section) which will put "good guys" that is good bacteria into his system. that could help with digestion. and don't forget the veggies!!!

You need to add some type of fiber to your son's diet. Apple juice sometime works, too. It stems from too much dairy. Try to limit the amount of milk that he drinks to 1 no more than 2 glasses a day.
Hope this helps,
Jenn

Hi T.,
I'm a holistic health counselor and if your child has pebbles, he's definitely constipated. But it's great that you're addressing it now, because so many children get impacted and end up in the hospital. Not knowing your child's diet, I would say 1) you have to increase his water intake. Dehydration is probably the biggest culprit. 2) Add some fish oil and olive to his diet - in cereal, smoothie, vegetables, etc. 3) Increase his fiber intake - McCann's oatmeal, Ezekiel cereal, 100 percent whole grain bread (not just whole wheat). If you need more help, let me know.

Does sound like a little constipation to me. Does he get enough fiber? Is he eating some table foods or just baby food or what? Check out online which foods have the most fiber and start trying to get more of those in him. Fiber one has some great cereals- you might try letting him eat those for breakfast or something. Just an idea. I give my son cow milk, too- I don't think that makes a difference. Course, he only gets about 10 oz or so of it a day. There's also some sprinkle fibers you can put on foods (or in baby food), but it does thicken, so you may have to un-thicken with some added water. Just an idea.
