Hi Moms - We are in the process of turning one of our extra rooms into a home school space for the kids. We are going to paint one of the walls with chalkboard paint. Has anybody used this product? I did a quick google search, and I'm realizing it comes in either a regular can or you can buy a spray can. There are also multiple brands. Any recommendations??

Any tips or tricks I should know before we start painting?? How many coats should I put on? And should we sand first?? Any and all input would be appreciated!
Thanks!!

Hi there,

We have used chalkboard paint! We made a giant chalkboard for our backyard using a piece of plywood. I have used the spray and the regular paint in the can. I liked the can better... I think it was Crayola brand. We used about 2 coats. It has lasted through rain and heat and we redo it about once a year.

I would recommend building some sort of a tray to catch the chalk dust if your chalkboard will be inside.

Have fun!!

We used it in our sunday school room and I urge you to read and follow the instuctions. It is a muliday process between coats of paints and drying time. If I remember correctly the last coat has to dry for 3 days and then calk has to be rubbed on. But it was worth it. We used the paint in a regular can and foam roller.

We painted a big square on my daughters wall and got peices of wood to border it and its just like a nifty chaulkboard! Its very easy to use and you don't have to do anything extra. They actually make a magnetic paint as well or you can get the combo paint. At our home depot they have other colors too, not just black. We chose black because we outlined it in purple. Good luck!

We painted our fridge with this, it works great, but be ready to do 3 good coats. I have heard the roll on kind works better than the spray, but I am not sure on that. We used the roll on, and it is good.

Ask, the person at your store.
They WILL tell you what is best.
That is what they are there for.

Now, personally, I would get whatever method would be easier for you.
Spray or can of paint.
And ask how many coats you need to put on, and what is the price difference.

We have it on our kitchen wall for reminders and we have a spot on the kids wall and we made two "portable" chalkboards. For on the wall we taped off the area with the blue painters tape. On the walls we painted right over the paint that was already there. It takes about 3 coats and I think a day of drying in between coats. Ours has lasted 3 years now. We use it alot! At first my hubby thought I was crazy but now agrees its handy. We didn't use the crayola kind but a cheaper kind from Wal-mart. It has held up fine.

Not sure about the chalkboard paint, but I think you can get dry-erase board at the hardware store and do the whole wall out of it. Just another idea if you don't want to try the chalk route.
