Hi Moms, I have to have a cavity filled today and just learned I am 4 weeks pregnant. The dentists told me it was okay to have novacaine without the epinephrine in it. What is your opinion and has anyone out there experienced any problems from this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks everyone for your advice. I did call my OBGYN and they said it was ok. So I did get the novacaine with no epinephrine. I don't know why, but last night I felt horrible and this morning I threw up. Maybe it is just morning sickness, but I've been pregnant before and didn't have any. So hopefully it is not due to the novacaine. Thanks again!!

your dentist should know what is and isn't safe but if you have concerns and need the reassurance give your ob a call.

It's perfectly fine. Just confirm your dentist does not use epi with the lidocaine. Congrats!

Hi,

I worked in a dental office for years. It is safe for you to have a filling. It actually is safer to have the filling than to let the cavity sit and possibly turn into something else like a root canal.
Since you are pregnant it is important to make sure that you are taking very good care of your teeth. Make sure you brush and floss at least one a day. Your gums can get inflammed while you are pregnant.

Ask your ob/gyn or midwife their advice. I had work done in 3rd trimester when a filling cracked and my midwife said it was ok. Dental issues can cause issues w/pregnancy like preterm labor so it may be better to have it taken care of now rather than waiting. Also if it's a small enough cavity you may not need novocaine. I've done it without (I hate needles...)

Good Luck!

Hi L.,
I had a root canal done while I was 8months pregnant, and no one ever told me it would be harmful to the baby. As a matter of fact, all I could take was the novacaine during the procedure. It seemed to be fine because my son is now 3 1/2 and thriving well!! When we are pregnant we want to make sure our babies are safe and healthy, I think you will be fine and your baby. If you are still worried, talk with your Doc. to see what they say. Take care and good luck!

L.,

Congrats on the news! My advice is also to not get a mercury filing--go for porcelain.

Best to you,
M.

I had some extensive work done when I was 30 wks along with my second daughter. My dentist was obviously aware of my condition and avoided anything that would be unsafe. You do need to make sure they do not do x-rays.

Hi L.,
My dentist told me the same thing but to be safest, if the tooth is not bothering you too much, you should wait until you are further along in your pregnancy. Everything you put into your body goes to your baby as well.
Best to you and your baby to be!!

I think the novocaine is fine - but PLEASE make sure you request a composite (white) filling and not an amalgam (silver). It may cost you a bit more, but silver fillings are more than 50% mercury. Several European countries are beginning to ban these "silver" fillings and hopefully we won't be far behind.
